| Haha alright. My youth church ministry performs this song quite often during Sunday Worship services. As a pastor, I don't have the time to review every segment of the song(s) played, since I constantly have to work on my messages for the service. Well, keep up the good work as an English teacher as well as for your colleagues. Stay strong! | |

| And don't take my word for it, this is just simply my interpretation towards this song. Many others can view upon the lyrics very differently. Regardless of what it truly means, you can choose to view it the way you prefer. | |

| Hi McDuffe. Yes, that verse is in the song. It is the beginning verse. It does sound like "done with you and time once had". but it is in fact "time with you..." I grew up with Korean as my first language. So don't feel to bad that it was hard to find that in this song. I learned English as I grew and matured, and now I'm fluent :) but I don't mean to boast if that is your intention. You'll eventually get the hang of English if you are struggling to do so. Don't worry, just hang in there :) | |

| Not necessarily about love. One of my church peers showed me this song. It was a great song I have to admit. To me It's about a situation or dispute that occurs between two close people. Could be friends, could be a lover, could even be family. It has to do with the fact that when a dispute or confrontation occurs between two people, they don't see each other in the same way. And the "storm" represents the fight. And when the "storm ends", and "I don't see you, as you are now ever again" is like never seeing each other in the same light. And when the storm ends, it leaves them nothing. That sort of shows how the argument will end up leaving them with nothing, emotionally and physically. | |

I strongly agree with your opinion. I'm a pastor who serves for a ministry in Los Angeles, CA. If you read my interpretation it is very similar towards your opinion. I'm glad your staying true to your faith. Staying true to the gospel. And as for you, I will pray for you that you may not be overwhelmed by the sinful sensations that tempts you. That you will show remorse and forgiveness to the weak hearted and the ones unfamiliar to the gospel. I urge you to never give up, regardless of what your personal struggle may be in right now, whether your struggling academically, socially, or even financially, thrive for the best and always be true to yourself. The Lord has a plan for you. Always. -Pastor Kim (if you have anything you want me to pray for you in specific, please feel free to let me know through a simple reply) |

In my opinion, this song also has a rather Christian parable to it. Although it is a secular band creating and developing music with a secular perspective, this song does contain content that some may agree to be a bit Christian. In the verse "Say Something, I'm giving up on you", that sort of relates to wanting to see or hear a sign that your prayers have been heard. That we don't only speak words of silence. And that we feel as if our words are mute, that there's no sign that anyone can hear our plea in prayers, that we are giving up and losing hope slowly. In the part "anywhere I would've followed you" that symbolizes that we would follow our God or the divine deity wherever we go, no matter what may come our way. And here's the full song with my interpretation towards it's Christian perspective which are in parenthesis: Say something, I'm giving up on you (lord, where are you? I need you) I'll be the one, if you want me to (i'll be the one to worship you, if you please) Anywhere, I would've followed you (I will honor you, wherever I am) Say something, I'm giving up on you (Hear my prayers, Lord) And I am feeling so small (I feel so powerless) It was over my head (my pride and ignorance has taken over me) I know nothing at all (I know nothing besides my sinful identity) And I will stumble and fall (I will fall and stumble as obstacles come my way) I'm still learning to love (I'm still learning to love and trust you) Just starting to crawl (starting to break away from sin) Say something, I'm giving up on you (Hear my prayers! O' God!) I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you (I'm sorry I neglected you) Anywhere, I would've followed you (I will praise you anywhere) Say something, I'm giving up on you (Oh lord, hear me!) And I will swallow my pride (I will rid myself of my sinful nature) You're the one that I love (It's you I can trust) And I'm saying goodbye (I'm saying goodbye to my sins) Say something, I'm giving up on you (Let me be heard, show me a sign father!) And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you (I'm sorry I keep breaking away from you) And anywhere, I would have followed you (I would have worshiped you anywhere) Oh-oh-oh-oh say something, I'm giving up on you (When will you hear me, when?) Say something, I'm giving up on you (Where are you God? I need your love) Say something (I need you) And just a message to whoever reads this: Be true and faithful to the Lord, our father. He will guide us to salvation. Regardless if your Christian, Buddhist, Islamic, Agnostic, or even Atheist; don't let sin or pride take over who you really are. Even in your darkest moments when you suffer, you don't suffer alone. When you feel alone, someone is there to comfort you. For our Lord ransomed his own life so we may be cleansed of our egotistical and sinful past. Remorseful and sorrowful we may stand, but we will always stand strong, for his steadfast love endures forever. Stay true to yourself no matter what. |

Things That We Should Say refers to the Ascension of Jesus Christ in the beginning passage of the Book of Acts. Apostle Peter and the other apostles gather once more to see the presence of the Messiah before he gives his Holy Spirit up to Heaven for good. And in this, the Messiah tells them to preach on the Word of God in his name, for soon they will be with the Lord in all things good. This was interpreted into a indie/folk song known as Things That We Should Say. Future of Forestry did a great job to make this ambiguous in terms of it's true meaning. It could be talking about a committed relationship, but in the true spiritual context, it refers to Jesus's last moments with the apostles. In the verse: "It's been a cold, bitter mile Maybe it could be a while Til the sun and the sky light the way I'll bring you close, you could stay Before our time has gone away We should say the things that we should say" This describes the struggle the apostles went through after The Crucifixion. And when the Savior had risen from the grave, the apostles were relentless in rejoice. The apostles welcomed Jesus with love and compassion, and in the stanza "Before our time has gone away", it describes the moment the apostles got to experience with Jesus. And of course "We should say the things that we should say". This refers to what the apostles should say that mattered, because they didn't have much time in their hands. Their words needed to be as pure as gold. For further information on this, please leave a reply. |
