I think the song is about meditation, and being able to perceive beings from the spiritual world. Lets see... The night is restless But no dream's in sight Lot of people choose to meditate late at night, because are more relaxed, and usually there is more silence around. No dream's in sight means that even if very relaxed, they are not sleeping, but instead very present And the sounds have no beginnings or ends And their glow is not a light It may refers to perceive other beings while meditating. It takes many many years to understand and even more to communicate with beings from "the other side" but in the first years most people perceive something, described as whisperings, not voices like we hear in this world. Their glow is not a light am almost sure it refers to their aura, some of them being so shiny and beautiful, like a light, but not one that we can see with our eyes. The walls turn into waterfalls With water made of thoughts that call In very deep meditations, and again after many years of practice, some people can have strange experiences, like being in another place, or being in the same place but with no walls, or begin to experience "special effects" like the one in this verse, and having the sensation and in some cases, the certainty that the spiritual world is more real than this one. The thoughts that call could easily refers to other beings trying to communicate with us, wich seems to be difficult for them, because of our density. We are not the king and queen What we are ties in between The blankets that you've never seen But over you are spread Again, a reference to "them" probably trying to explain that are not royalty or Gods, but just spirits like ours. The blankets over us may imply that they are between us, that can observe us, even if we cannot see them. Other possibility could be the ability that supposedly some of them have, to jump from the inmaterial world to the material world and back "tying in between" "We are here" the voices sing "We are here" the echo thunders "Yes we are" the doorbell rings "Here we are and here in numbers" In my opinion refers to spiritual awakening The others came in from the hall And thoughts with voices start to call "It's not OK to tip the glass Or smile too long or shed a tear You're not alone the way you thought Things have changed now we are here" More of the same. I just dont understand why It's not OK to tip the glass or smile too long or shed a tear You're not alone the way you thought is ultimate reference of them being here with us. "Things have changed now we are here" in my opinion refers to the future of humanity, after the spiritual awakening we will be able to be where they are, not having to come back here because we learned all we had from this world. |

I believe that this song is about Materialism and falseness in humanity. First of all, I’m pretty sure that the 1st verse is a reference to meditation "Hello darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk with you again". It is known that certain kinds of meditations lead to a superior knowledge of universe and life, in a process that cannot be easily understood but the protagonist uses the phrase "talk with you" to simplify it. He had a very shocking dream and he will try to find the meaning through meditation. In the 2nd verse, the neon lights in the night are a clear reference to advertisement, consumerism (expression of Materialism), and also, the neon lights are generally used as a reference of prostitution. When it says "I walk alone Narrow streets of cobblestone" and then "cold" and "damp" it refers to a place or even a society without human warmth and without spirituality: no light = no spirituality; because the only light is artificial; and the one who have a little bit of conscience and clairvoyance to see that is all wrong gets "stabbed by the flash of a neon light" The 3rd verse is more obvious: "People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening" is a way to say that conversations are superficial, meaningless, empty. Then thousand is just figurative language meaning that amounts of people live and behaves that way, but no one dares to change this; could be because they conform with it, or even because they are a part of it. The 4th verse is also obvious. The protagonist tries to warn the people that this lifestyle is like a cancer growing inside of you. He tries to teach people and he offers his help, but no one cares; his words are dismissed. The last verse is a reference to celebrities and idols, that are like artificial gods created by people. Finally, “'The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls” means that in this society, the value of spiritual knowledge is so low, that is only present in forms or places that nobody cares of. The most repeated phrase and also the title of the song “The sound of silence” is a contradiction, because we all know that the silence doesn’t have a sound. The point is that this is a fake sound, you can hear it, but it’s fake, empty, or filled with “silence”. |

| I bet that it was a close-minded christian to give -1 to your comment, which i find very intelligent. Very oftenly, pastors and priests get stuck in religious rituals and understant nothing about real spirituality. | |
