what this song brings to light is the moment when a spiritual path is challenged and you have to make a decision on how to proceed. i have always disliked this song and I think it's because the character the singer is portraying isn't sure if they are a superficial path or a real one. I think if you can see both paths at the same time as the same thing then you are doing something right. if I'm quoting someone else, I'm sorry, I can't remember who it was - but I'm pretty sure that some of it is Michael Stipe. |

for some reason Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John popped into my head a few days ago and so I decide to investigate. There's a few lines that go - So goodbye yellow brick road, where the dogs of society howl - and so I'm at a small Jojo Hermann show and everyone was howling at the lines in this song and I thought - so if these are the dogs of society then the yellow brick road might not be too far away if not right under my feet. |

i think these lyrics bend around the lessons we get as young adults without saying what they are. Two simple lessons that might fit are, "follow your heart" and"do your best." So I think what Alex was doing was sharing the intent that his elders gave him. Perhaps an ode to his parents or teachers. |

I read somewhere that the lyrics for the song Ship of Fools were written by Robert Hunter and that he wrote that song for Jerry to keep all the fools away from him when he became famous. So this song might be a reminder of that.
Or it could be advise they thought they could give to the new youngsters on tour.
Or maybe its impossible for anybody to be an authority on love and least they tried.
