Well, the smart money's on Harlow ** Harry Harlow described that love is strenghtened by contact and described negative effects of isolation ** I don't think the narrator quite believes that and his love grew stronger with rejection (and that, kids, is a fact, love does grow stronger, if you are rejected) And the moon is in the street ** for howling at the moon see Queens Logic, starring Waits as Monte (I have only one thing to say to you ...) The shadow boys are breaking all the laws ** and don't they always And you're east of East St. Louis ** and what ESL is to SL, EoESL is to ESL. And the wind is making speeches ** and if you attribute meaning to the howls of wind, you have waaay too much time on your hands And the rain sounds like a round of applause ** and you have to find comfort somewhere (H. Harlow talks of Iron Maidens) Napoleon is weeping in the Carnival saloon ** the great conqueror (and a small man) in a country obssesed with winning, much of which is just a charade His invisible fiance is in the mirror ** well that's a great victory if there ever was one The band is going home ** it's a musician in a band, probably the person singing to you It's raining hammers, it's raining nails ** a great expression, especially if you're feeling down Yes, it's true, there's nothing left for him down here ** he knows it now [Chorus:] And it's Time Time Time And it's Time Time Time And it's Time Time Time That you love And it's Time Time Time ** time is a precious commodity And they all pretend they're Orphans ** we might have switched perspective to another person, or the same person is describing his other relationships or relationships in general ** they play on the sympathy (who is they?) And their memory's like a train You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away ** and forget you immediately after you're gone (again a reference to Harlow) And the things you can't remember Tell the things you can't forget that ** there's a bit more to what has happened than he is willing to admit to us and to himself ** and there is a difference between this time and that time History puts a saint in every dream ** and we all idealize and idolize (sometimes) Well she said she'd stick around Until the bandages came off ** hanging on to something gone won't bring it back (he really messes with Harry Harlow) But these mamas boys just don't know when to quit ** but when it's over, it's over And Matilda asks the sailors are those dreams Or are those prayers ** Matilda is another name for Death (personified) in my back of woods So just close your eyes, son And this won't hurt a bit ** so the dreams or prayers dilemma could be akin to old Will's To Be or Not ... [Chorus] Well, things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl ** we might have switched perspective again, this time to a pretty girl, or someone close to her ** we might as well not, the same person might be describing his old love from a different "her" perspective The boys just dive right off the cars And splash into the streets ** boys come and boys go, not making a real stop for her And when she's on a roll she pulls a razor From her boot and a thousand Pigeons fall around her feet ** then she reciprocates or is just vile to someone who's different ** or someone is trying to explain her behavior just because she is special to him ** or he is trying to portrait "her" to himself in a more negative light So put a candle in the window ** stay open (advice) And a kiss upon his lips ** that open Till the dish outside the window fills with rain ** we can only hope this Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart ** weeds grow in (moist) empty spaces And pay the fiddler off till I come back again ** ... and we're back to first person musician in the last few verses |

In the lyrics I see three very wise men and probably one wise woman in a car heading west on the streets or highways of predominantly christian America in a semi-meditative state you get in sometimes as a passenger on a very long trip. All kinds of thoughts and feelings come up into consciousness, some very briefly, some disappear bypassing the memory completely. Zen knows of a feeling of being on the edge of satori (or at least kensho), when you might need a push to really "fall into it". The push however doesn't come and the only thing that remains are these lyrics and a powerfull contrasting driving sound of this song that I enjoy so much playing out real loud in my car. The sound however tells me, that the eastern star the wise driver in the car is following might as well be a Texaco star or directly a western star truck. The themes seem to be spiritual vs. mundane experiences and the (in)ability to reach epiphany or enlightenment. |

After first hearing this song my thoughts were: Have "Soggy bottom boys" gone pop and techno? Indeed they have. The singer is the same as in the "Man of constant sorrow" and the Cohens' "O brother where art thou" is a direct inspiration for the music and lyrics. O brother wher art thou is rooted in Odyssey, although set in 1930s, but the themes of brotherly love are universal and have not changed much form the philadelphia of the times in which the original Odyssey was written. |
