Moonface – Julia with Blue Jeans On Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm always turned off of this song at first because it's so incredibly dark, but whenever I do stick it out, it's such a beautiful, compelling, simple love song. Sonically, he moves from that dark, almost gothic sound that is very complex to a simple chord progression by the end. And his lyrics follow the same tone and complexity throughout.

It begins with him describing how he hates this woman so much at the moment. I suppose it could have been after a fight they had, with the verse about roses. But then later, once they've cooled off, he remembers just how beautiful she is. It's basically the feeling of coming back to someone after you've had time to really think about what they mean to you.

This song is very indicative of the whole album, in which he follows this emotional, volatile, tumultuous relationship with this woman, who's name is probably Julia. Just a wild guess. They fight all the time and are toxic to each other at times, but still need each other because they're just...in love. And I really like how he explored the many different facets of love and having a relationship, not just typical love songs.

Volcano Choir – Comrade Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the point of these lyrics, as with most of the lyrics Justin Vernon has written, is that they are supposed to be ambiguous. He has said that sometimes he just says some words because they sound good and he likes the tonality of them. (Bear in mind that he made up several words on Bon Iver's self-titled album and "dramnesic" in this one. And what the hell is "Terraforming?") He's a musician with a musician's ear for words. That said, of course there can be a meaning interpreted from them. Volcano Choir and Bon Iver are artists, and a major facet of art is the participation and reaction of its observers, so that the observers then become active artists in a sense. Could it be about love? Yes. Could it be about drugs? Absolutely. Could it be about a monkey throwing its own feces? It's a stretch, but if you see it that way, then yes.

All things aside, this is an amazing song. The way he belts out "Terraforming!" is absolutely gorgeous.

The Envy Corps – Baby Teeth Lyrics 11 years ago
This is such a powerful song. I think it's about someone who realizes that things are different and he doesn't want them to change, as indicated by the last line ("How clever I thought I waaaaaaaas!!!"). He would just keep trying to patch it up and make it work any way he could think of (rubbing the blisters with brine to heal them), but ultimately things hit a critical mass and he realized that not even he, with all of his efforts to make it work, could justify trying anymore ("frankly, dear, we wear me out"). He's sick of it because the other person just won't cooperate ("I won't sing to you again, cause you're not listening").
