In my point of view , I think of a man who comes back to a place from his past that recalls him of a lost relation .
When he`s saying "If I let you go" he`s reffering to forget her and go on, and well her memory will haunt him in his dream , I guess she`s dead . |

Agree with you mostly in everything , however ,I don`t think Layne`s death was sudden , at the time they performed the MTV Unplugged he was extremely weak and drowned in depression . So the ending was rather obvious .............. |

I don`t know if he composed it thinking in his uncle , but for sure it depicts the lasts moments of an agonizing man after committing suicide. Damn well explained , for sure transports me to those moments and the melody can`t be better; one of the best Cantrell`s songs . |

In my opinion he`s referring to an aspect of his personality which is no pleasant to him. Some actions done in the past ,wondering if forgiveness will be possible . Things like this occur when you`re driving alone and start thinking , happens to me all the time.
As I`m not english native , I don`t quite get the meaning of "elusive high" . |
