He has done something that everybody hates him for. The only person who stood by his side is "you" in the song. And he regrets what he's done. No matter howhe pleads he is an outcast to the world. They hurt him and he is helpless. All he can do it throw spiteful words even though he knows they won't do any good or harm.
When I read it I couldn't help but feeling sorry for Dan. Such sad lyrics, I think. |

I guess Dan is with someone who he is really in love with. But she's cheating on him or something, referring to: "Well I know where you've been/ And I've seen what you've seen/ And I've read all the books /On your shelves and in your nooks" But he's still I love with her even though he knows what his partner is doing.
And he knows that Dan knows (he's gay) but his partner is still pretending he loves him, even though he doesn't. Dan is asking his boyfriend why he's doing it: "Still I don't understand/Though it's there in your hands/Why you beg and you steal/For a love that isn't real" .
Dan says he will do anything for his partner "In a field by a stone/I could sit for days alone/Not a thought for myself/ Not my happiness or health/Just the fool that I love/With a push and a shove/It ain't easy to be true/ But I do it just for you" but his partner is never happy "Happiness can find us nowhere."
Despite all this, Dan still believes it will work out: " Happiness will find us somewhere."

It's weird how the songs upbeat rhythms contrast with the lyrics. I reckon Mika needs to try and conceal the true meaning of the song more. I mean, I'm under 12 and I don't have to scroll through you guys good suggestions to figure out what it means. |

I reckon Dan's lost someone to the war. He feels it's his fault, referring to the first verse "A dear heart, a small part, I could have tried more

And I think everybody's trying to take his mind off things but he sees them as trying to make him forget about his rested loved one. He is bold and protects the memory of his friend/ lover : "But it's too late, the locks break, I won't let them take it all away
Wrong or right, I just fight to keep my world safe"

I think it's about a guy, the singer, whose had his heart broken. And this makes him cranky, grumpy, he turns his back on the world. He's so grumpy he gets worked up about the little things: "my piano's out of tune" "this telephone's out of use". And he doesn't think straight. His heart is broken and he wants everything to make him feel better. Expensive stuff; helicopters and ocean liners. He forgets the little things like family and friends that could cheer him up. |
