Also: " Look upon your greatness and she'll send the call out " Meaning that you won't be loved by thirds if you do not love yourself the way it is, imperfect. |

I feel like this song is about superficiality and unawareness. Some people choose not to deal with reality because they are too weak and when it's time for them to step outside their safe shelter, they are unprepared. Others ignore reality, they turn their back to it and they create their own imaginary life where everything is perfect, their brains drowning in glitter. Even worse, some people tend to to be too aware of reality, so much that they forget to dream of dreams, that they are afraid to make one step farther. That is all wrong judgement. We have to be aware of our surroundings and have them linger in the back of our heads everytime we are about to make an important decision. But we've got to never forget the beat of our heart, as years go by and let it be the flame in a room full of darkness. As it was once said: "Use your mind and follow your heart". |

The song is about two addicts, not really close but friendly enough, that make drugs together. But as they start caring for each other one worries for the health of the other and they can see that what they're doing is wrong. In the end his friendship replaces the need for the drug. Lorde keeps highlighting the phrase "I like you" meaning that him, who symbolizes a life full of love, is more important than the drug. Therefore a steady and reliable friend is a necessary good. |

I think this song is about the importance of having a reliable and steady friend in our lifes. Lorde is making drugs ("We're hollow like the bottles that we drain") 'cause "Got a lot to not do" with her friend ("Can I kill it with you?"). "We might be hollow, but we're brave" means that they are affected by the drug but they don't forget their responsibilities ("You pick me up and take me home again"). As they keep making drugs, they start to do more things together : "I love these roads where the houses don't change = suburbs Where we can talk like there's something to say" And she starts to actually like her friend ("I'd like it if you stayed"). And because they care for each other now, they see that what they are doing is wrong : "I'm glad that we stopped kissing the tar on the highway". So they decide to not make drugs again: "Now we're wearing long sleeves And the heating comes on (You buy me orange juice) = which is healthy We're getting good at this Dreams of clean teeth" and they realise is much better! "I can tell that you're tired But you keep the car on While you're waiting out front" He's still in the state that made him take the drug and he is getting tired without it but he keeps trying to stay away. In the end they are determined to stay clean and keep living without the help of the drug but by the happy memories: "We move in the tree streets" = suburbs |

| Lorde – Tennis Court Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I think the lyrics combine fame, human nature and politics in one song! "Don't you think that it's boring how people talk Making smart with their words again, well I'm bored" - People talk for the sake of doing it not for any serious reason / People talk to show themselves by words and not actions. "Because I'm doing this for the thrill of it, killin' it Never not chasing a million things I want" - She chases her dreams because she wants to and not for fame. / It isn't words that define her but her actions. "And I am only as young as the minute is full of it" - She is happy (young) only when she takes action "Getting pumped up from the little bright things I bought" - Here Lorde's trying to make contrast: getting pumped up vs. things I bought It means that she gets pumped up only when her dreams are achieved by being herself and not by buying silly things. (non-materialist) "But I know they'll never own me." - She'll never be owned by labels in her career / people's expectations in daily life. "Baby be the class clown I'll be the beauty queen in tears" - People achieve popularity by pretending to be sth they are not, (comparison to high school politics). "It's a new art form showing people how little we care " - Pretending is an "art form" (irony) that shows how little respect people have for their true selves and their beloved ones. "We're so happy, even when we're smilin' out of fear" - They look happy but they are not. "Let's go down to the tennis court, and talk it up like yeah" - At the French Revolution, royals and politicians not having someplace to discuss their problems, went to the tennis court which was an unexpected place for a meeting to be held, therefore a safe one. The Revolutionairies wouldn't find them there. So "Tennis Court" is someplace where you can let your real feelings out and not be judged by haters. And by someplace I don't mean a location. "Pretty soon I'll be getting on my first plane I'll see the veins of my city like they do in space" - Here Lorde is closer to her dream than ever. "But my head's filling up with the wicked games, up in flames How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known" - Her happy thoughts are polluted by "wicked games" meaning that although she has always been trying to follow her dreams despite everyone and everything, now she realises that her dream will fall apart 'cause when you're known it's all about the people. "And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them" - Her beloved ones try to comfort her and she gets distracted by how much she loves them. "Everything's cool when we're all in line, for the throne But I know it's not forever" - When she's unknown, competing for the top, as every other person in this world, it's all easy. But when she reaches that top and becomes famous nothing's easy anymore. "It looked alright in the pictures Getting caught soft with the triple is it I fall apart, with all my heart" -Although she looks good in the pictures, she's actually falling apart from the inside. "And you can watch from your window" - You'll watch the pictures but not me. Speaking about people's habit to gossip and put labels again. |
