| I think that it is about a teenager ( probably 16 as suggested) being caught up in a violent fist fight and getting so damaged and hurt that it resorts him to hospital. The family and friends are gathered and ( this part is especially my own interpretation) the person who failed to save him or was the one who threw the finishing blow is overwhelmed by guilt as the news comes in that the 16 year old is going to pass on. | |

I think that this song is about a soldier going away to war with the hopes of keeping in contact with his sweetheart from back home, but she never responds to him. And so, he is left writing letters with no replies - basically just writing to himself- and yet she is the only thing that is keeping him sane in the war environment. When he returns home, he finds out that she has moved on. My dear Amelia, is it wrong to wish for more than just your name And if i could come home it's safe to say That bombing runs and machine guns would try and beat me back The world and all it's hatred couldn't keep me off my track This is where he (the soldier) is asking to learn more about his sweetheart and that he would come home he would for her, and nothing would stop him because of his love for her. Your all i know Your all i know This speaks of how she is his only connection to the world outside the war. And was it what, was it what you wanted Was it what, was it what you wanted And was it what, was it what you wanted Was it what, was it what you wanted This is soldier realizing she is with someone else, and is asking her is her new lover better than what they had together before he left for war. I'll write to you a thousand times but your reply always fails You know my head becomes so weary And baby my hands become so cold So here's just one last note i'll write to you baby My dear Amelia Could i be so bold to say This verse shows his wavering want to continue on, with the weather and exhaustion from soldiering, not to mention the lack of replies from her. He is certain that he could die soon and so makes sure to tell her that her mere name is all that kept him sane. And was it what, was it what you wanted Was it what, was it what you wanted And was it what, was it what you wanted Was it what, was it what you wanted Sing it up speak it out so true Im still in love, still in love with you And was it what, was it what you wanted Was it what, was it what you wanted This is again , when the soldier comes home and he finally realizes that through all he has been through he still loves her. He wants her to be sure with her decision hence the repeated question of 'was it what you wanted?' Overall this is a lyrically genius and poetic song, and is touching when the base meaning (at least with my interpretation) are understood. Mallory Knox never fails to stun. |
