I think the sense of this (like most of AB songs) is about going over the illusion of the world that generates separations and conflicts. Myles is deep into holistic vision as related in most oriental and esoteric philosophies: "will they open their and realize we are one?". We are individual manifestations of one bigger reality (call it god, infinite, great spirit) materialised in a physical world. "On and on we stand alone" until our death when we should learn to love each others and the world, cause we are all one thing. Got it guys? So start doing it now, open your eyes!!!! : ))) |

I think the whole album is dedicated to Layne and the AIC experience. All members used drugs but Layne was the one who really got self destructive. He couldn't cope with them and was really overwhelmed to the point of being unable to perform and finally got phisically attained to complete "degradation". I think the song is a summary of Layne's life: the verse "the boy hesitates, when grown you'll make the same mistakes". Actually Layne's father was drug addicted, he abandoned his wife and two kids (Layne and his sister), but reappeared when Layne turned famous. They did drugs together for a couple years (mid 90's) after that the father got clean, but Layne didn't succeed. 31/32 is maybe related to Layne's age (he lasted till 34). The hotel room is maybe related to the anonymous condominium where Layne segregated himself in his final years. |
