@[John_D:37715] It was the limey's saying setting up Hong Kong as the hub of the opium trade was going to be good for everyone in England. |

@[Zanderman14:37713] It is beautiful and tragic, he's talking about how the English, went to war and forced China to get addicted to opium, Hong Kong was the city created to facilitate that inhuman thing they did to get super rich and maintain themselves as the superpower on earth. Hong Kong became the wealthiest city on earth for quite some time on the back of that mule...Damon is a genius, this song sublime. |

@[AdamantVision:37712] not wishing..he knows, REM's "Losing My Religion" is similar because I've seen so many interpretations but to hear Mike Stipe tell it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd9r7sd-Ueg) it unrequited love...to me it was released as my eldest son faced his teen years and I watched him "lose his religion" of all the things he'd been raised to believe. |

@[WhiteWolfDief:37710] Once you've seen that city of light, you can't describe it where folks will believe you, this song is the aftermath of Trick of the Tail..."am I wrong to believe in the city of gold, that lies in the deep distance"...I've personally had these feelings..lived in a place where people were unafraid and lived a happy life to the fullest..no one believes you can have happiness in life..Phil explained it on the ABACAB tour, twas alien abduction and revelation. |

@[justfellin:37708] ABACAB is the verse layout on the song, that's what it means, now for Dodo/Lurker, it's about how flippantly humans treat the world around us.."Minkie pretty minkie must die", the Dodo was real up until explorer's wiped them out, "it's only living, it don't matter at all"...all about how man takes the natural world for granted. PETA should use the song as their anthem. But what an awesome song, musically and lyrically...if you've ever seen them do it live...just breath taking. |

| Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics

This album and song meant so much to my life and it still does. Knowing the story and keeping the lyrics in context to the album, Rael was witnessing all of the symbolic things in his life, manifest and confront his exposed self as he learns again and again that things aren't what they appear. He's learned that you can't have meaningful life focused on self (Masturbation in the song Cuddling the Porcupine at the end of Back in NYC) and sex by how "the world" thinks it ought to be (Counting on time) where it didn't work out when "following the book"...
He's is confronted with the devoted caricatures of the iconography of his time in the carpet crawlers, they see great promise but can go nowhere and it frustrates him as the real frailties of the larger than life caricatures become more and more clear...he's finding the cracks in authority...remember this album is all about self discovery..how we are in charge of our self and future no matter how or who we blame it always comes back to us...we can be happy, we can be the person we are...Rael...Peter Gabrael made this magic that a name truly would stain...It makes me wonder if Da Vinci knew when he made the Mona Lisa...I don't think the individuals who made up Genesis at the time understood how important this unreal work of real art is...in 500 years they will talk about it like we do Beethoven. |
