I think this song is about placing your problems and troubles on someone who's not even strong enough to handle their own. And everyone has the habit of venting to this one person who's slowly breaking down inside and can't handle their own life let alone guide the others being thrown at them so quickly. When he sings 'be my breath', he's asking for help. Someone breathe for me, or in other words, someone take care of my problems for me like I've done for you. "This ship of fools will sink," I think roughly means "You guys are all going to end up hurt because you relied on me, and here I am, falling apart myself." We're all gonna sink together in the end, it's inevitable. |

I always thought this song was about having the ability to have faith in something or someone despite one's impurities and sins. There's no black or white, we're broken into a million little pieces, not all bad but not all good either. Everyone's got there dark secrets they aren't willing to tell anyone, but we also have the things in our lives that we live for and shout out for the world to hear. No matter how far in to something we get, we can always turn around, because that faith is still there and its unshakeable. |

Personally, I think this song is about a really deep relationship. It doesn't have to be a romantic relationship either. It could be as platonic as could be. I think it's about a person knowing they're not good enough in many ways, and even though they know they aren't, they're willing to do anything they possibly can to make it up to the other person because they are the, "smell before rain, the blood in my veins." They are that person's everything, everywhere they look they see them, smell them, feel them, hear them taste them. That's what it's like to love someone. All of the lines that start with, "If it makes you less sad" go on to list all of the things they would do for them. A majority of them aren't pleasant, and don't benefit the person promising them, but they're willing to do it if they can move on and forget even if it hurts. And of course, the last stunningly written stanza, is further expressing the persons love. It's basically a way of saying 'I know you inside and out. You would be the thing to kill me, but you're the same person that helps me make it through the day. You're the person I see in everything, even if I really can't see you anymore'. So they close the song with, "Call me a safe bet, I'm betting I'm not. I'm glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes, you can forget." I think it's closing the song, which is just an entire promise. Promise me, If I do all of these things and destroy myself for you, you'll forget what's made you hurt so terribly. I'll keep my promise if you keep yours. |
