I think the tennis court could also be a metaphor for talking. The whole "back and forth" of conversation, or arguing. There's even a sound effect in the song that kind of reminds me of the old video game Pong. Anyway, she says it's boring how people talk, and she repeats in the chorus "let's go down to the tennis court and talk it up yeah (yeah)" The second "yeah" symbolizing a tennis ball getting bounced back over the net, or a meaningless conversation bouncing back and forth. Also, if you've seen the video, it's just of Lorde mouthing the word "yeah" here and there. To me this shows how kids, especially teens, will just blindly agree to things their peers say to fit in. But all the other interpretations, like bringing up the French Revolution, are really interesting. And, gotta ask - does anyone know what this line refers to: "Getting caught soft with the triple is it" I'm completely unfamiliar with the reference. |

Agreed. I'm not an ex-junkie, but I've known users and like to think I'm familiar with most of the street terms and methods, etc. Plus long sleeves and "killing time" until your veins are bruised? Yeah. IV drugs. Definitely. Plus, the whole album has a lot of references that could easily be about drugs. |
