| Actually, Samael is the Angel of Death. Lucifer was the name of Satan before the fall. And I believe the song is less an attack on Christianity itself and more a series of scathing remarks directed at the actions of the Church in the past. | |

I, unlike apparently every other listener, reject the idea that this song is about the environment, or a changing world. No, dear read, it is in fact about transhumanism. Confused yet? Good, now read on. "Souvenirs sustain life. Souvenirs of flesh and bone." This line is about the remnants of a human body, after it has undergone a cybernetic "enhancement", something that our current technological path is clearly leading to. They still 'sustain life' as the brain still sends signals for an artificial heart to beat, and a pair of iron lungs to breathe. "Waste them all for wealth and gain. When the time comes you'll know." This line is about shedding even those last remnants of humanity and embracing full roboticism. Perhaps someone is promised a great deal of money or power for being the first experiment, or an average fellow is promised to excel, something he has never done before. For whatever reason, all vestiges of humanism are forsaken in favour of technology. "Machinery dredge the sea, and all that's left is memory." No, they're not talking about literally dredging a sea. They're talking about dredging the 'sea' of humanity, removing everything that is human in us, so all that is left is memory of what it means to be human. "All the time they lie to me, they suffocate. All the time they're suffering. When will it end?" Pretty obvious. Corporations lying to the little guy and pulling him around by the nose. All he wants to do is have it end, which leads into the next verse. "It breaks my heart to watch, as we rip this world we have apart." Pretty much the only part in the song that could really be interpreted as "we're screwing our planet in the corn hole". But again, it's a metaphor. We're ripping our environment to shreds, yes, but look at all the violence in the world. Look at the wars, terrorism, all that. We're destroying our society and our very humanity as well. "Kill for pleasure. Seven wonders of our history. Endless pleasure. Careful pleasure. Guilty pleasure." (I cut out the needless repetition and corrected the lyrics to reflect the 2007 version) This one is fairly obvious in its meaning. 'Kill for pleasure': kill the human in us so that we can experience pleasure. The seven wonders alludes to what we managed to accomplish as "mere mortals". "Endless pleasure" is about the nigh immortality granted by stripping away the flesh and bone of the human to replace it with machinery. "Careful pleasure" a caution against replacing what we are to be "better" than we are. "Guilty pleasure" what little remains of the human being guilty of replacing so much of himself and knowing he can't go back. "Machinery bled the sea. You protect this misery. Sacrifice no sacrifice." Again, this refers to the sea of humanity and its replacement with technology. The protection of misery is about the apologists of machinery as a replacement for man. Sacrifice refers to the sacrifice of ones humanity, and physical limbs/organs/etc. to be replaced. "No!" Of course, the rejection of it all. ...Remember when music was about hip thrusting and blue suede shoes? That was such a simpler time. Maybe this is a consequence of the modern music scene growing up, as our rosy view of the world is stripped away and the bare, rotting core is exposed and we are forced to confront the reality of a cruel, unfeeling world. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it, take from this what you will. |

| Devin Townsend – Supercrush! Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I'd like to interpret the "By a Thread" version of Supercrush! which differs a little from its studio companion. First off, the tone of the music, switching between a haunting melody and explosive riff. While a contemplative song, it also holds elements of both whimsy and plain old recklessness. The melody says "Think, contemplate, philosophize, but don't forget your humanity!" Now, onto the lyrics. "So the time is right, so tell me if you wanna? You should change it if you're gonna But I don't really know how... I've already tried... INVOLVE." This verse seems to be about indecision, especially the first three lines. However, it makes a snap decision in the end, representing a decision in the person, and by the emphasis, a final one. As for the choice of word "INVOLVE" for the so-called 'decision' of the verse, it points to the idea to incorporate debate, but not let it bog you down from making a decision. "I don't want to save my soul now I just want to lose control And even if it takes a lifetime to learn I'll learn." Yes, in the live version, the lyrics change to 'I JUST want to lose control'. And that skews the meaning of the entire song. 'I don't want to save my soul' is a rejection of religion (not spirituality), which many of Devin's songs incorporate. 'I just want to lose control', points to the idea that he want to let go, entirely, and not hold back himself anymore. Not to lose control in a negative fashion, but to not let the control that peers pressure on you BE you. 'And even if it takes a lifetime to learn, I'll learn'. This line shows his determination that, no matter what, he will be an individual and not allow himself to be judged by his peers. "Don't fall in line... If you're thinking that you're gonna... You should maybe think about a reason in your own mind... You've already gone! EVOLVE." 'Don't fall in line...if you're thinking that you're gonna You should maybe think about a reason in your own mind' These lines are about the pressure to fall into peer pressure, or into line. It also says 'if you think you're gonna...think about a reason..." This is hinting at, or saying outright, that if you want to be in the crowd, just another guy or girl in a faceless sea, then you need to think of a reason in YOUR mind. Not to take the opinions of others, but to form your own. "You've already gone! EVOLVE." The 'You've already gone" is a shout from him to those who have already given to peer pressure just to be part of the crowd. Where the 'EVOLVE' is a cry for them to become better than that, to rise above the crowd and decide for themselves where to stand. "Here now, see friends, Hear our defense, Heroes' time gone by." This is almost a continuation of the idea of the previous verse. This could be the words from the mouth of some people who have risen above the crowd, who have 'evolved' as it were, and want their former friends to join. They call out the 'heroes' their old friends worshipped by call them by gones. "Here's our descent, Hero's defense, Heroes left you to die" Another continuation of the previous bridge. This is a few of the 'evolved' becoming saddened that their friends can't join them, so they join their friends. They go back to defending the 'heroes'. Finally, the ones who stayed above the crowd and simply say '[the] Heroes left you to die". And that's my 39 cents. |
