| The Smashing Pumpkins – The Boy Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I've always appreciated James' contributions to the band. Even though Billy has pretty much covered all the emotions through his music career, I felt he has never been able to convey pure feelings of unfiltered romantic love, which James does really well. IMO James gave the late-90s Pumpkins a haunting, ambient sound as well as songs with layers and layers of extremely well-orchestrated parts. He is extremely underrated and it would be really cool if he were still in the Pumpkins - he would be perfect for what they are doing right now. "The Boy" is one my favorite songs that James wrote for the Pumpkins. And it's about young, innocent, pure love. I think "the boy" in this song is James referring to himself. According to the lyrics, he's in love again and he can't breathe/stop/think, etc. Like pretty much every young person, James is in a state of euphoria and believes that nothing can go wrong. This song definitely captures the feeling of a high point in a romantic relationship. |

| Bloc Party – Kettling Lyrics | 11 years ago |

This song is about riots and is sung in the rioters' point of view. Kettling is a crowd control method used by police to quell riots. Depending on your own interpretation, Kettling can either be a protesters' anthem, or a ugly portrayal of the heinous looting and other crimes that rioters so often commit. In the former interpretation, it makes sense, as the years leading up to the release of the song have seen democratic revolutions most notably in Egypt and Tunisia. Kele may have seen them as heroic and wrote this song to capture the reckless, young energy of the rioters, who captivated the world with their "righteous struggle", etc. In the latter interpretation, it also makes sense. Kele could just be satirizing the self-righteous kids who proclaim "the future's ours" and then go and smash up a bunch of shops. Ultimately, it's up to the listener. At the risk of sounding corny, like all revolutions this song has more than one meaning. |

| Bloc Party – The Prayer Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| To me this song has always been about being one of those manufactured, cookie-cutter celebrities whose face is plastered on billboards and TV screens across the nation. Though I think Kele intended the lyrics to be about nights out in clubs, the song could also be talking about the thoughts of a diva/performer right before going on stage. Lyrics like "I will charm, I will slice / I will dazzle them with my wit" sound like they're coming from an insecure entertainer trying to maintain his/her image. And the lyric "Is it so wrong to crave recognition?" reminds me of someone trying to justify throwing away artistic integrity for the sake of fame. This theme of realizing being vain, bored, and shallow among fast-paced modern life is a prominent theme in AWITC. | |
