I believe this song is about Pete Wentz's painful divorce from Ashlee Simpson. The song begins by asking a person (perhaps Ashlee, another girl, or a friend of Pete's) if he can tag along as Pete is greatly troubled by the divorce ("troubled soul") and doesn't wish to go back to the heartbreak he is leaving ("I don't think I'm coming home"). Pete says he'll "check in tomorrow" if he isn't dead, alluding to drug use; the divorce has set him on a road to destruction ("this is the road to ruin"). The chorus is a message to Ashlee. "Let's be alone together" means "let's both be lonely." Pete doesn't want to feel alone by himself and hopes Ashlee feels the same. Pete also expresses a desire to return to the way things were: "we can stay young forever" and not let time tear love apart. "You cut me off I lost my track, it's not my fault I'm a maniac" finds Pete blaming Ashlee for his current condition, telling her "it's not funny." "My heart is like a stallion, they love it more when it's broken" is a powerful simile depicting Wentz's emotional state. People love "broken" horses because they have been tamed. Pete finishes his message to Ashlee by telling her "I'm outside the door, invite me in so we can go back and play pretend" yearning for the relationship he once had. "Tonight I'm high as a private jet" refers to more drug use. "Alone Together" is a powerful, emotional song depicting some of the aftermath of Pete's devastating divorce. |
