tame impala picked a very interesting title for this song. the song is about a man talking about a hypnotic state he is experiencing where he is unsure what kind of reality he is inhabiting. all he knows is to go to sleep and he will be fine. and by sleeping out this "deep, hypnotic sleep"... he can escape the dreary grind of real life and find comfort in a new day. but there's so much more to the lyrics i won't get into the muddy gritty of it. therefore: http://www.wordreference.com/fren/endormir the word "endors" is actually the informal "you" conjugated form of the french verb "endormir". endormir is an interesting french verb (and very clever for this band to pick for this specific song title). it is clever in that it doesn't just have the traditional "to sleep" meaning in the french language. instead endormir is defined as verb more like "to put to sleep" or "to drug to put to sleep" or "to lull to sleep". as for the word "toi", it means not just "you" in french, but more like an emphasized "you". we don't have this in english so it's hard to explain this, but this "toi" word put after the informally conjugated verb of "endormir" goes to emphasize the "put/drug YOURSELF to sleep" this fits beautifully with the meaning of the song, as we are able to now define the title to mean "put/lull yourself to sleep and simply stop thinking and start DREAMING". absolutely beautiful thinking by these guys also to the guy below me named WhatdoIdo you're an absolute fucking retard if you think this band was somehow referring to star wars haha wtf man u srs bra?? you're not gonna make it sources: self-taught student of french for 2 years |
