I seem to have taken to this in a different way to most people. The first time I listened to the song I wasn't that big a fan until the end of the song where I literally got shivers. I think that the song is about a woman but from the perspective of her long time friend. I think the "surprise, surprise" can almost be taken as a sort of sarcasm or tiredness. I think the main verses (deeper, faster, etc.) are the stages of a feeling that the woman goes through as the relationship progresses and eventually (surprise, surprise) ends in feelings of darkness and noise. I think the end of the song (as in my opinion it was sung with a kind of exhausted passion) is about the friend offering to show her a good night, whether "more than friends" or not. Just my thoughts. Sorry for the bad musical teminology too. Not my forte (haha). |

| I appreciate that the song may have a meaning in context with the album or band, but when taken as a standalone piece, I feel that this song has meaning to me, like my own personal meaning. That's what I think of when I listen to it, and that's mostly why I like the song. Although the song may have a 'correct' meaning, I honestly think it's up to the person to decide what it means to them and how they want to interpret it. After all, this is a work of art, and works of art are always interpreted differently; they're for enjoyment. I think it's brilliant that 2 people can listen to the song and hear 2 different stories. I think it's part of the beauty of it. | |

In my interpretation (with the music video's influence, too) I get the idea that she is in a relationship where she gets bored or is a more of a trophy wife (maybe for a very highly respected figure because in v1 she talks about how the other person could view her as a fantasy), etc. and she ends up seeking out the company of another person. She falls in love with this other person to the point where she can't be without them. She then breaks off her old relationship to be with this new person. Just my opinion. |
