It's crazy how so many people can get different interpretations from songs they listen to. To me this song is about Billy struggling with his faith in his religion. He was a religious man (he wrote about his good faith, and belief in jesus in his poetry book, Blinking With Fists, which was after he wrote this song) but his faith was 'sleeping' inside of him, he needed hope. He also didn't know how to tell anyone that his faith was sleeping, he was 'helpless'. He's telling humanity to be ashamed of the mess it has made of the world, he can't forget all the bad things it has done. (I had trouble interpreting the chorus, so I may have misconstrued the meaning) Then he starts talking about castration, a religious ritual, he makes it sound extreme, boys to the bone, in addition he uses the word mutilate later on, it all sounds to horrific. He asks jesus if he's even there, paying attention to humanity. 'We are the fossils/ relics of our time/ mutilate the meanings/so they're easy to deny' he's talking about Scripture here. I think he's trying to talk about how we are the surviving link to the past, our religion has changed, based off the interpretation of the Bible that we construct ourselves. We also change the meanings of the Bible, to our own benefit. The chorus starts again talking about we should be ashamed for doing such things. Then he says quiet/i am sleeping/ i don't trust you/ i don't hear you. He doesn't trust today's version of God and religion. People altered the meanings of religion that he no longer trusts the institution itself. the grace of falling snow/ cover up everything you know/ come save me from the awful/ sound of nothing. Falling snow is graceful, it covers the land beneath it. It also covers our sin, like nothing has happened. He wants to be saved from the sound of nothing- he's calling God to action, to make a noise and show that he is still up there, watching out for humanity. |

zombie queen is pretty much right, although I have a different take on the second verse. Instead of the second verse being about the music industry it is about the public's affect on the bands success. The music industry is so competitive; there is a ‘big fight’ between bands to become famous. But the audience must be aware that those celebrity musicians that we look upon with reverence are only ‘angels with their wings glued on’, they are just people like you and I are ‘frightened and scared’ without the audience’s eyes on them, giving them publicity. Without public interest, their music labels would drop them. |

I believe this song is about misjudging people. Disposition is the way people are, their essence and qualities. So a disposition fell over him, and things became the opposite of what they seemed. A normally restless child was patiently reading, the defensive armory wall was hurt and bleeding, he was so surprised at these occurrences, his head was swimming. And then soaking your head, people tell others to go soak their head when they believe the speaker has no idea what they're talking about. So basically he made assumptions about a person based on his idea of their disposition, and he turned out to be wrong, and now he walks slower and takes his time to make assumptions about people. Yup, that's my take away from this song. |
