I personally interpret this song as mainly just about earthquakes. "They're moving earth outside. The ground is shaking like no beat. A dense terrible sound. At once both teeming and asleep". - pretty self-explanatory. "It seems to me to be a sign. I don't believe in such, and yet It seems to me to keep one eye on the situations best". - Maybe he thinks the earthquake is a sign of worse global disasters to come, and he'll keep an eye on it. "It's really not that kind To terrorize one in ones sleep And if you really tried You'd probably cut the chase too deep". - Being woken up from an earthquake, obviously pretty scary. "It seems to me that that's a fine way To keep you off your feet". - Well earthquakes can definitely keep you off your feet. "Their seems to be no over side For the two ideas to meet" - Makes me think of two people on opposite sides of a crack in the earth, but probably not relevant. I think the "Oh no, I hit rock bottom" could be a cheeky word play, maybe someone who fell down a fault line, which would be rock bottom. |

Why are there no comments on this song????? Amazing somg and one of my favourites off Information Retrieved. Anyway, I think it's pretty suggestive of someone being followed by some government agents. Maybe a nod to X-Files, following the sci-fi theme of a lot of their work. But it mainly makes me think of Alexander Litvinenko, the ex-KGB who was poisoned they believe through a drink somewhere. |

I think this song is about someone with OCD/anxiety. There are the references to the walls closing in, which could be a sign of an anxiety attack, with a lot of other phrases which could indicate this. Then there are references to habits - "old habits fade far from me" which makes me think of rituals (e.g. washing hands). I think possibly "Just the idea of a thought brings it round again" is to do with compulsive thoughts, when you get thoughts of completing rituals, then you have to do them to stop the thoughts, but the thoughts come back round again. Then also "Gonna work me over For a misdemeanor" makes me think of someone punishing themselves for having these obsessive thoughts, in the way that someone with OCD might have to complete a ritual because they have a thought they perceive as bad. If this song is not about OCD, and let's be honest I may be reaching, I think it is likely to be about depression. Knowing Pinback, it might be about something completely random, like Stargate. |
