The song seems to be talking about how a person experiences the most growth - physical or personal - when the going gets tough. "When you're down is where you'll find yourself." That's the first two verses. The third verse talks about how someone who truly cares for you will try to push you to grow, and to do that they will not try to make your life easy. That kind of person is rare though. "This kind of love is hard to find I never got to you by being kind" The second part of the third verse seems to take it a step further, saying that to really push for growth, you must give those you love the tools they need to succeed, and then test them, even harshly. "If I'm the one to throw you overboard At least I showed you how to swim for shore" |
