| Townes Van Zandt – Only Him or Me Lyrics | 8 years ago |

The moment that Townes wrote this song, he was starring at a bottle or whiskey. Considering all his songs were in the perspective of places, persons or things; Townes hardly ever wrote about himself. When he wrote this song in New York, he had found out that the pains in his stomach were due to its liver eating itself from years of alcohol use. This was durring a show where he passed out and went to the doctors. He goes around switching the narration but it's him talking to his bottle that's in front of him and the bottle responding back. Here goes a brief explanation. "Time runs in and then runs out, starts again and it's always been that way" the bottle tells Townes about how it's going to be okay and that he might be back. "I see you like you look right now and maybe wonder why I had to go" Townes was leaving drinking for his wife to get her back. As he looks at the bottle, he looks at it the same way he will always look at it. With love. "The clock don't know you like I do and it's only him or me you got to believe" the bottle now tells Townes that Time promises a long life but in reality no one understands Townes better than the bottle. Due to him leaving alcohol, he relapsed from going sober way too many times. His liver couldn't handle leaving that dependency so many times in a short period of time. The liver at this point was surviving because of alcohol. With a strong need, Townes liver failed and he died. |
