Clearly the song is about Freyja. If one knows anything about the Norse belief of the afterlife, half of the warriors who were slain in battle head to Odin's hall in Valhalla. The other half go to Freyja's hall Folkvangr. Fettered felines and a battle swine Feast like there's no furture now, showing no restrain Mead and mayhem, golden drink divine Let me in your heathen hall, lady of the slain This is evident. Freyja is known for her chariot pulled by two wildcats, and her boar Hildsivini which she uses for transportation when not using her wildcat chariot. The other three verses speak about her hall Folkvangr. Tears of red gold she cries Tales have her realm far beyond the skies And if a battle was your demise May come the night when you see she cries Tears of red gold The tears of red gold are another specific relation to Freyja. She cries tears of red gold for her husband Odr, who is frequently absent and she is consistently searching for him. Folkvangr is indeed beyond the skies, and if you die in battle you may potentially be chosen by Freyja to come to her hall. Burning beauty hung above her breast Moments in her company, high and holy pain Flaming fairness, I will find no rest Until I have reached your hall, lady of the slain The burning beauty being Freyja's necklace Brisingamen.The name itself comes from an old term Brinsgr which means "fire". Freyja got it because she was so encapsulated by its beauty that she agreed to spend a night each with the four dwarves who were making it. Burning beauty is thus a fitting term for it. Again there's mention of her hall Folkvangr, and lady of the slain is also a fitting name for Freyja. Not in the least because she chooses half of the slain, but also that her name itself means "lady". I hope this was informative. |
