I completly agree with starfire, "you" are fans and "they" is the band. If you think about Ultra and its story, how much was difficult for DM to make an album, their physical and physiological condition.. I think the "poor tortured souls" are they themselves, indeed they are "good at their trades but they'll always be failure" (and they really meant that in 1995-97). Furthermore "clerks", "tailors", "sharks", "sailors" could be metaphors of their job and something related to it. "wretched disciples And the love that they swore With their hearts on the Bible" is of course related with religion, but don't forget "Sacred", where DM say that love is their religion! "Beseeching the honour to sit at your table and feast on your holiness" because fans have to love them and their work.... "as long as they're able" indeed during the Devotional Tour Fletch went back home because of his depression, when Alan left Martin thought it was the end of the band and Dave had his problems and he couldn't even sing anymore and so on. Under this light the refrain is clear, because of their need of love (from women, from life, from fans etc) they were martyrs and of course they did sacrifices (just think about the record of Songs of Faith and Devotion and the Devotional Tour!). "Love will be the death of my lonely soul brothers": they thought they would have died during DT and anyways Martin said that none of them are the same person after 1994. "But their spirit will live on in the hearts of all lovers" obvious! :D "You're holding court With your lips and your smile Your body's a halo Their minds are on trial Sure as Adam is Eve Sure as Jonah turned whaler They're crooked love thieves And you are their jailor" the fans judge, and will Ultra get the same appreciation as Music for the Masses, Violator ans SOFAD after all that happened?
