First off I think the song itself is casual so its probably about casual things, stuff that you do on a daily bases that isn't heartbreaking or mindshaking for me its cruisin around town listening to tunes, watching a favorite tv show, Having a party something that doesn't invilve relationship or major surgerys. |

I just love the idea of your girlfriend says its time to sell but everything it fits so well. It always seems that way in relationships. It so liberating to have someone else who feels the same way thanks I think the magic is working |

| The National – Racing Like a Pro Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
One Way of looking at it. Your mind is racing like a pro now... it doesn't mean a lot... Even though this is an misrepresentation of this song that is how I heard and interpreted this lyric the first time I heard the song. This lyric is a reminder that when we make strategic plans, assessments or have "professional thoughts" concerning a given situation such as a problem at work or an issue with a relationship one should not expect things to go smoothly. While your mind may be at ease with a present situation unexpected things may occur that may cause you to have to change your plans.
Another way of looking at this is as a kind of acknowledgement of a paradox or contradiction that is presented when you accept the idea that no matter what you think in preparation for the day you never know what the day brings. The paradox or contradiction being that we thoughtfully prepare to face situations that in reality we can not pretense. When we fancy ourselves "professional racers" in a journey that has no real start and finish line we might be setting ourselves up to crash. So we can interpret this lyric to intend for us to kind of step off the merry go round so to speak. One may also interpret this lyric to say not to think, calculate, access risk so much even if that pertains to a choice in career path or a selection of a mate. In other words the good things in life come easy and the less you second guess things the better off you will be. The challenge in life is to gratefully accept what has fallen into your lap as a gift no matter what it is. Be grateful, Live passively because by being less aggressive or by not taking life by horns you might actually be opening yourself up too great opportunities that you would not have seen before with your tunnel-vision. Have an Open mind and accepting your heart. |
