| Mayday Parade – Sorry, Not Sorry Lyrics | 12 years ago |

(Again, I need a life) This song, beginning with the title "Sorry, Not Sorry" is obviously supposed to be in ways sarcastic. Another song about a youthful relationship, (again with possible first love?) that persisted, and there's a lot of conflict. However; the speaker is getting tired of being pushed around ("And I lay down my coat so you can walk all over it Just like you do me) and sticking around ("No I can't break it down, Not around this town no more"). With these negatives there are also the examples of love and care that the speaker has for his love, mainly seen in the multiple hyperbole (exaggerations) in the lyrics (ex: "Well I'd walk on fire just to be next to you/And I'd climb the highest mountain just to see your point of view/And I'd swim the edge of the earth if you said you wanted proof") |

(Excuse me while I write a book to analyze a three minute song because I have nothing better to do.) I think it's pretty clear that this song is relating to a girl who used to be in a long term relationship with the speaker (broken up), and now that he's starting to move on she's trying to get back into his life, which is unwelcomed and uncalled for, considering she has moved on much quicker ("I'm tired of believing we could ever heal these broken dreams/When you're still sleeping in someone else bed"). The speaker, while obviously upset, still has feelings for her as seen in the lines "Or grab my hand and tell me what's the difference between/Heaven and Hell, 'cause I can't tell". He isn't able to gauge if being with her is divine or torturous, though he considers her an angel, which is the common motif throughout the album. Though this angel isn't used to be alone, which is why she craves the attention from her former partner. The first lines of the choruses: "I want to thank you for your card, 'Cause ______ says it all" marks an obvious progression on the speakers views toward the situation. At first, he says "'Cause Hallmark says it all", claiming that her desire to return isn't genuine, and that it's two dimensional and generalized. Secondly, he says "'Cause silence says it all", and this shows the underlying layer of her wanting to return to him. The fact that she refuses to speak "says" that getting back together is for her own greed and comfort, not his. Lastly, "'Cause nothing says it all", just furthers that point - though there is something notable about the difference between "Silence" and "Nothing", as the term "nothing" is a main theme of the song. The song itself is called "Nothing You Can Live Without, Nothing You Can Do About", the first nothing referring to their past relationship, and the second referring to her unable to restore that relationship. This theme of "nothingness" (I believe) is the blatant answer to the driving question: "What are we good for?" Nothing. (Damn, that's deep af) |

So I think it is a song about a possible first love, considering the the lines "Paved the way for me to follow/ But I was only 17", and the possible temptations encountered in that love (i.e. Demons and the chorus "One fell out of my dreams/ It crept into my heart) and the inevitability of it ending (And when it's over/ Stay true and act the part/ I know it won't it won't last but that's the way it goes) The "poison" is referring to the symptoms of love, i.e. "Dizzy, sick, and paralyzed" as in making one's head spin, the feelings of butterflies in the stomach, and unable to move in a significant other's presence. In the second verse, the lines "And if it looks like Armageddon's coming down today/ I''ll kick back a bottle of that poison, it's made for you and me" it's referring to if today is the last day we have left I want to spend it in love with you, which are really intense feelings one could be experiencing for the first time. But hey, that's just a theory. |
