I feel like this song kinda sums up the lonely life of a shy man living alone. The narrator seems to switch between internal monologue and actions in the stanzas. The first stanza he talks about somebody calling on Tuesday but he is stuck on sunday. That to me sounds like a friend or lover calling to check in or just talk but the narrator is still stuck on decisions in his past. The second stanza talks about the narrator walking through life as though he is just killing time waiting for something or someone (the line about your hair) to save him from the doldrums. Third stanza is him explicitly saying that he wants someone with a bit of trademark Beck jargon shoehorned in. I just recently dug this LP up from my crate. A couple of good listening songs on it! |

This is one of Beck's apathetic, lazy, "Fuck the world" songs. I liken this to Deadweight as both the songs seem to emmit a subtle "screw it". This one is a little bit darker than Deadwieght. Close second to my favorite song on Mutations. That goes to Tropicalia. Such a wonderful album! |

This song is definitely the "Pit of Despair" song of the album. This very accurately describes what happens after the end of a long term relationship. This is the moment when the world seems to stand still around you and you don't know if you'll be able to take the next step in life. Everything seems so very insignificant and you begin to notice the cruelty of others in your now vulnerable state. Its a fear of the future. You don't know what the future holds but all that you expect is disappointment and pain. I kind of liken this song and Lonesome Tears to Radiohead's "How to Disappear Completely". While How to Disappear Completely is frankly much darker and much more of an emotional sucker punch, each song describes that moment in your life where you don't want to move forward. Where you wish that all the pain, heartbreak and torment to disappear. The similarity between How to Disappear Completely and Lonesome Tears is purely musical however. Either way this is an elegant and dark beauty of a song. |

I feel like the video to this song is actually quite relevant(look it up on youtube its actually quite beautiful). It depicts a purely white clad Beck going through daily routines. He waters a white plant with white liquid. he types white text onto white paper witha white typewriter. Eventually he sets off into somewhere (other than the purely white world) unknown. he searches for a while while holding a white rabbit. eventually after minutes of the gradual instrumental build to the climax, he meets another man clad solely in white; a kindered spirit. They sit down at a bench and as the first stage of the climax developes they both vanish. Than scenes of Beck's former white world flash quickly.
What this has to do with the song: He, in the song, is describing how he is struggling to move on: he is stuck in a routine just like he was in the white world. eventually by the second major stanza he begins to move on and rush recklessly into an unknown world in search of someone or something that can ease his tormented soul. In the video he finds this person but the song lacks this resolution. |

To me this song seems kinda of like a boy who is stuck in a horrible situation. The "wish coin" part just shows how he is desperate to get out. I feel like at the end when he says the "Driving on the sidewalk..." part it kinda symbolizes that he got a car and his freedom. The world on fire in his rear view mirror is the world he used to be trapped in is collapsing as he leaves- just in time. The tone of this song seems to be a bit too badass to be about his inner vulnerabilities. Great song! One of my Beck favorites! |
