This is a song about the British taking the Aboriginals Land and how the Aboriginal people have been ignored in favor of big companies by the government since colonization. The words are saying that through all the things that were taken from them, that they still deserve more political and cultural say as they have been here for 40,000 years long and that it should be embraced. |

I believe that this song is about Climate Change/Environment. As the lyrics talks a lot about nature and how we should be giving back to the earth as it gives to us everyday.
Midnight Oil have many songs that are about the Aboriginals, but this song is not one of them, with all respect, the songs by this band which are about the Aboriginals is "Forgotten Years" and "The Dead Heart" to name a couple. In "Beds are Burning" there is no mention of Indigenous at all. Midnight is a blunt and outspoken band and if you compare The Dead Heart for example to Beds are Burning you will see the difference in language is actually two separate political issues, both of which he is a strong support of then and now. |
