| Florence + the Machine – Shake It Out Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I take this song a bit more literally than most. It seems to be mainly concerned with having to drag a dead horse around, getting fed up with that (must be a right pain going to the shops, with everyone staring at you), and deciding to bury it. It needs a good shaking - presumably it's got lots of fleas (and possibly maggots if it's been dead a long while). I guess it must have been her favourite pet, otherwise I can't imagine why she would want to drag it around with her. It's not actually darkest before the dawn. It starts getting light quite a while before the sun comes up. It's usually darker late at night, unless there's a moon. I think she's just got a bit confused. Probably worn out with all that horse dragging. Although she is quite correct about the difficulty in performing coordinated dance moves with a devil on your back. It makes it very difficult to balance properly. It's especially distracting when they're trying to get their pound of flesh (devils are know for their love of Shakespeare and are always trying to extract pounds of flesh, carrying skulls and trying to get rid of spots of blood). Not quite sure why she decides to attempt an unassisted heart transplant halfway through the song. Those operations are difficult enough when done by trained surgeons. But hey, maybe she has ambitions beyond singing. |
