Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics 6 years ago
This song was written around 1964 before commercial computers & smart phones so take into consideration the his numbers may be off a bit. I feel that Mr. Simon, the composer, as a Jew, combined the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt & the Holocaust with contemporary times. During WWII the Jews had to hide, they were silenced by Hitler. Sometimes we ignore the wise & lean on our own misguided understanding. We don't listen, we worship idols, we get caught up in the commercialism, we follow the crowd like Lemmings, we are silent. Many died due to silence. We hear a song but do not truly listen to what it's trying to convey, therefore we are essentially deaf to the true meaning of the song, just as the Israelites lost faith, at times, in Moses & God so also Mr. Simon feels his most important music sometimes falls on deaf ears. The "words of the prophets" are everywhere, if you listen you may even hear them whispering, is Simon referring to song writers here or God? "This is what the LORD says: "'Cries of fear are heard-- terror, not peace. Ask and see: Can a man bear children? Then why do I see every strong man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor, every face turned deathly pale? How awful that day will be! None will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it." (Jeremiah 30:5-7 NIV)." "So verse 7 on its own simply tells us that at some point after it was written Israel would experience a time of unsurpassed suffering, and would be saved out of it. Verse 8 gives us a clue as to the period: "' In that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them." (Jeremiah 30:8 NIV)." I am not a very religious person & yet I cannot ignore the religious undertones of the lyrics. For some, music is the rhythm, the beat, for some it's the melody, for others it's the lyrics, but for those who believe all three,or four, are connected & equally important the song becomes a work of art, a message, a mantra & may even give one Frisson. This song gave me Frisson the first time I heard it around late '65 or '66. Never allow silence such power...

Derby – If Ever There's a Reason Lyrics 6 years ago
Having lost a child November of 2013 the lyrics make so much sense, especially since they are singing about Autumn. Autumn is the ending of all the seasons just as death is an ending. And yes I'd "rather sleep the day away" than deal with my cruel reality. "When it comes down to me and I grit my teeth and I start to stall" he's singing about the guilt associated with feeling pleasure. Well meaning friends try to get you to go out, be social again, but with losing a child one never knows when the tears will flow so we "stall", make excuses, avoid public places. I now grocery shop after 10 pm to avoid seeing anyone. The best descriptive line for me is "Find comfort in the finer things that keep you close that keep you safe
Within this room". I used to be a very social person before, but now it is common for my car to sit in the driveway for days. It is so safe at home, no questions to answer, no "I'm doing well" lies to tell, just the choice to answer the phone or door or not, to just be able to cry or not without making others uncomfortable. Great song for the series "The Good Doctor" as Dr. Aaron Glassman deals with his daughter's death & the guilt he still feels.

Junip – Line of Fire Lyrics 9 years ago
“It’s about growing up and taking responsibility in that moment when all of a sudden your life changes, you’re in a new situation,” González says. “Your ideals are challenged, and you have to think things through from a new angle.” ~ Jose Gonzalez Composer & Lead Singer of 'Junip'
I lost my son in 2013 & my life changed forever. Everything was different, some friends became very distant, my family changed, I now have only one child. I hosted every Thanksgiving & Christmas for 25 yrs.,for my family & my nieces & nephews, now it is too difficult for them to attend for I remind them of that empty chair that brings sadness to them all. I must adjust & try not to dwell on my grief, self pity & feelings of abandonment by friends & family. I must "step back from the line of fire" so that I may love & nurture old & new relationships & live. I must learn how to live again.

A Perfect Circle – Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums Lyrics 9 years ago
My view is this song is a hard core lullaby. The bodies are those who have succumbed to drug overdose. Heroin deaths in the U.S. have quadrupled in the last 5 years. I hear a father/mother saying that he/she will do whatever it takes to protect his/her child from this war, the fracturing of family & devastation even if it means isolating him from good & bad, isolating him from the world, even himself. Because when it comes down to it, the only person who loves someone that much is a good parent. I lost my son to this "war" but I never thought to try to isolate him, I never gave these lyrics a thought until after his funeral, then they all made perfect sense but it was too late for me & him.....

I love them & their lyrics are so creative. transposing words & the creative inflections of voice at the perfect moment! Amusingly I can relate to every song in one way or another. Loving the cello in this, it emotes a sadness in their joint loneliness.Very cool, very cool.

Saliva – Click Click Boom Lyrics 10 years ago
The click click boom is definitely about the clicking of a pen & song writing. But the line about clouding his mind, why is my mother always right & crawl away & die makes me wonder if he's gotten involved with drugs & now he's having trouble writing songs & slowly losing his confidence. In the beginning he talks of his youth & having a big imagination. Then there seems to be a very subtle hint some type of transformation that has taken place as the song proceeds. Agree or disagree?

Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi – Two Against One Lyrics 10 years ago
I interpreted that last stanza as hospital personnel "foot soldiers (Nurses), sycophants (Residents or Medical Students), yes men ( Consultants) & his planned suicide, how he was going to outsmart "them" by planning "around them" for a successful demise.
