Jude – Rick James Lyrics 3 years ago
OK so, 15+ years later (internet time travel in full effect)

Yeah to me this is: "you exploited my friend and she killed herself because of it. You think you're some sort of OG badass. But you can't hold a *candle* to the original." (And then, every time I hear this song I add some version of this in my brain voice: "...and be thankful you're only being dragged in song; You deserve way the hell worse.")

Tim Minchin – Phil Daoust song Lyrics 3 years ago
re:\nhttps://www.theguardian.com/stage/2005/aug/16/comedy\n\nMon 15 Aug 2005\nGilded Balloon\nPhil Daoust\nTim Minchin - winner of the Melbourne comedy festival\'s director\'s choice award - arrives in Edinburgh trailing cloudlets of glory. The Australian comedian/ musician is popular enough to pack out one of the festival\'s biggest halls, and to be cheered after every gag and comic song.\n\nIt\'s enough to make you believe in mass hypnosis. Strip away Minchin\'s fretful porpentine hair, white piano and willingness to fall off the stage for a laugh, and you\'re left with a bog-standard stand-up with a silly voice and a few good songs, most of whose material would have seemed dated in the last millennium. He must be the last person in the world to be surprised by the spread of mineral water. When he does address more topical subjects, such as smug environmentalists, what should be bite is all gum. And I don\'t think I\'ve ever heard a lamer attempt to change the subject than: "Hey, is anyone married?"\n\nThe self-satisfied gurning seems to last for centuries. Then Minchin makes the unilateral decision to give us an encore, the last thing you need in a festival where acts stack up in the wings like jets over an airport. He even congratulates himself for keeping the next performers waiting. Whatever happened to that fine old tradition of tarring and feathering?\n---

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – Speedboat Lyrics 8 years ago
Not sure about meaning, per se, but seems to be, if not based on then at least inspired by Renata Adler's citylife novel Speedboat. ("You were all right there...until you lost your cool" is a line from page 4 of the paperback edition, and "...we are still friends" appears on page 38. I think that's it for any direct lyric-to-book comparison, but the vibe is unmistakably similar...a cast of young men and women wending their way through early adulthood in the city.

Neko Case – Night Still Comes Lyrics 12 years ago
Same here. That haunting intro is completely hypnotic to me, especially those piano bass notes…..but I can't figure out what the hell it was that I never held at the right angle!

"There are so many tools that are made from my hands
But the tide smashes all my best-laid plans to sand"

Best couplet I've heard in a LONG time.

(LOVE that she's in The New Pornographers. "Moves" is one of my favorite songs of all time.)
