On the whole, based on the song title, other entries, and my personal opinion, this song speaks to me as freedom from the shackles of our physical constraints and our petty problems/relationship drama. What she wants to leave behind are the aspects tangible to us (a husband/wife, the birds, the clouds, etc.) and breach some sort of epiphany on a higher level or "higher ground". Florence is a spiritual person who seems dissatisfied with small love affairs whose hearts leave her cold, and she wants to convey here that she doesn't need nor want someone's past or future which could mean that what she's searching doesn't have to branch for a long period of time, she's just asking for "one bright moment", which could be interpreted as a spiritual encounter or enlightenment. She might even be speaking to herself, and saying that she doesn't want to worry about her future, and she doesn't need to be held down by her past--rather wanting to transcend to higher ground. She might feel held back by her own body and bones, where her history (or rather, past) keeps dragging her away from achieving the spiritual level that she wants to, because it keeps pulling her down. Flo wants to lose her mind in the act of leaving behind her thoughts and worries, and enter into a more elevated perception of things. Let's face it, Flo is a goddess of musical genius. |
