| Sarah McLachlan – Building A Mystery Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This is about a man who is untouchable, it is impossible to capture his soul. He is unique, he shines and he is captivating. He is also confused & careless... composed...and appears to be happy and free on the outside-"a smile that won't wash away" he is building the mystery of him, this is what makes him so intriguing....he is so beautiful b/c she can see his soul and cares deeply for him, even through his carelessness and confusions...and he is fucked up b/c he can't see what is in front of him, and will not let her in except for when she his in his arms.... | |

This is going to sound crazy, but I think it is about a man going through a mid-life crisis, realizing that he is still wants to be young. He is a successful, powerful, kind, magnetic, and an admired individual (with heart of gold) who realizes that he must ( or want ) tp be living. he is giving the advice to the younger men that he knows to live now, b/c life passes you by- "you must be living" ..."you have no time to lose" And when you're older you realize how much you long for sparks, being impulsive and having freedom-you want to be alive again- The sucessful man (the general) had many achievements throughout his life...during the younger years, when he was focused on is career only and not living his life. He is this person that everyone (the younger men)look up to an respect. "He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face"=meaning covering his is past b/c he is disgraced with the meaningless(his perception) of the life he lived...until he came to the realization (which lead to a midlife crisis) that life is too short, get out there enjoy every second. And I think that, "go now you are forgiven" (I believe that the lyrics are forgiven and not forgiving) but I think that line is a conclusion to how the general took action. I'm reaching here but I think that the action was attempting to live his life , practicing what he preached...and after this action was carried out he realized afterward that it was a temporary state of insanity (which could have been he thought he was in love) and then coming back to reality (wife, children, responsibility) "The fight is not worth fighting" THE FIGHT meaning fighting to be young again and livng on the edge, because in the end it is"not worth fighting" because of all that he will lose at this point in is life (family, morals, pride) But at the same he becomes more of a man through this mid-life crisis, who is human - who makes mistakes, and gives this advice to the younger men. That's when the "you are forgiven" part comes in.... someone who loves him, says, you did what you had to do--"go now" back to your life (wife, kids) "you are forgiven". This other someone knew how everyone respected him, knew what he went through and is the one telling the story. The general was a good person but made mistakes, and was human, just like the rest of us. |
