Macklemore – And We Danced Lyrics 12 years ago
Hey,

sometimes people just mean what they are saying.

He sings about the past not about a current situation, is dressed in a weird 70s/80s like outfit and uses a accent that also reminds of 70s or 80s.

This does not indicate irony but revival of a specific time and with that he invokes the lifestyle of that time. This lifestyle is heavily connected with disco and dancing.

So what could be the deeper meaning in all of that? Well he clearly states it in the song (and yes it is criticism of current culture but maybe in a different way than mentioned before). After painting the picture of a good party he continues to describe that he will have fun and just does not give a fuck (basically the whole second half of the song).

So what is the criticism? The following line makes it quite clear:

I will not be a mannequin

especially in contrast to the 2 lines before where he makes fun of himself.
His criticism dots at current youth culture in general that is heavily focused on reputation and showing off. Going to parties does not mean to let loose and just dont give a fuck (altough it is often described like that in songs etc.) but it is heavily based on be seen and be perfect or perfectly imperfect (depending on the subculture). Even dancing at parties is becoming competitive nowadays instead of just blowing off steem, jumping around and enjoying the music. This is unfortunately not restricted to pop culture as also in Hip Hop/Rock/Metal... for example it became more and more about presenting and style. As no specific subculture of today could be used to do the criticism because most are influenced by this development Macklemore decides to use a different era.

Regards,
Mookie
