Our race became a cancer on our planet because of our endless desire to gather more and more. We are sucking our planet resouces because of our consumerist society. Why we became a consumerist society? Because we are tring to substitute our internal needs of love and approval for consumption goods or beautiful lies ( because they make us happy for a while but leave a hollow in our heart as time passes by and that's why we keep wanting more and more money, material goods, social position... |

It's a personal song like most 30 seconds to mars' song, although can be applied to all of us. How many times we have to pretend to be something that we are not in order to please others? How many times we hide our past shortcomings and we do everything to not let others see them? How many times we feel shame of us? How many times we let our dreams go way because we don't have enough strength to follow them, especially when people around us say that we are fools to dream about the impossible. How many times we use all of sort of diversions or compulsions that hide away our pain? |

It is about how he hides from the world and how he uses a mask, not letting the others see who he really is. But although he hides behind an empty face, he would like to be different. This song is about how Jared used to be so shy and fearful about showing and following his desires and dreams. He was so fearful of judgment and what other people might think or say about him and that's why he hide his love for making music for so long, not letting the world know where his heart truly was all the time. basically, it is what happen when we have a dream but we are so scared that we are not good enough to fulfill it, so we keep arranging excuses and beautiful lies that make us feel good inside so we don't have to face our fear of failure. |
