The Lumineers – Don't Wanna Go Lyrics 11 years ago
I love this song. The first verse clearly paints a picture of someone (I'm thinking the mother) dying. The man sees blood, tries to get the woman to wake up. The ambulance comes and drives away.

"Suits were made for men not boys"

I think this means that he feels like he and his brother mentioned later in the song aren't old enough to go to a funeral, much less one for their own mother.

"And this faith that we fake is a choice"

I'm imagining that maybe the family wasn't very religious, but when the mother they had to go to the church and pray anyway.

I think the chorus us him refusing to go to the funeral. He doesn't want to see his mother if it's the last time he'll see her.

The second verse, he is obviously having a hard time dealing with her death, denying that her life is over. And telling people not to say it's over. I think it's interesting that he refers to himself as his brothers "stand in mother." To me, "stand in" makes it sound like he will only be his mother for a short period of time. Just untill his mother comes back.

This song is so chillingly beautiful

The Mountain Goats – No Children Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think this song is as sad as I originally thought. I think there has to be some sort of love, that forces someone, despite their annoyance and anger, to not be able to "find the strength to walk out"
Before, when I heard this song, I thought of the hopelessness of a couple that is doomed to seperate.
But I'm not sure that's right.
The couple obviously aren't particularly found of each other, but they seem to love each other almost against their own will. And I don't think that a love like that is hopeless.
Difficult, maybe, But not hopeless.
The very lines seem to almost taunt the other person.
"I hope you blink before I do"
What a childish line in a seemingly mature song. But it's beautiful, that sort of love. The one that turns you back into a child, back to the days where if a boy was mean to you, he liked you.
The innocence in this song is almost covered by the harsh lyrics of hoping someone dies. But the innocence is there. The beautiful, innocent, simplicity of a horrible, complicated relationship.
