This is a song about complacency and refusal to change things for the better out of fear that they might end up worse. It seems to most likely be about a relationship, but could be about any aspect of his life. Shaun is a master lyricist, able to say so much with so little. There's a lot of passion in the simplest of phrases that can be interpreted many ways. "You're a blister On a finger And I'll keep you around, Just to keep them around" You're unwanted, but you're there. Getting rid of you would be a hassle, and since it's not that inconvenient, he'll just keep it for the sake of keeping it. "So unexpected You're sequestered But you keep it alive, Yea just keep it inside again" To me this means he feels alone, and while that feeling is unexpected compared to how he used to feel, he'd rather feel alone than actually be alone, so he just bares through it "And than we'll follow you home again And give the sickness we give to friends And than we swallow you whole again In my wide mouth To praise" I think the sickness is the facade that they put up, trying to convince everyone, friends, family, even each other and themselves that they are happy. The wide mouth is the fake smile. Instead of referring to it as a smile, he just describes how it looks, because that's all it really is. A smile would be real, but the expression he puts on is not. It's just a wide mouth, taking in her lies and his own. The second verse seems to be more elaborating on that feeling of jut putting up with whatever happens and going with it. "Just pretend we're in bind"- if you feel like leaving or giving up, just pretend you don't have that option, pretend you're bound. "If we find her Can we keep her Just as cold as we found her As old as a memory If she flinches Seven inches We'll just keep it alive And just keep it inside, yea" I read another interpretation of this verse somewhere that says "her" is simply a personification of their "love," and I'm inclined to agree completely. He hopes to find what they lost, but he'll settle for the memory and hope, because that's all they have. |
