"Gale Song" is supposed to be looking at Catching Fire from Gale's perspective. It's saying that he should have taken Peeta's place and been there for her through the whole ordeal, but he couldn't because he's "ten thousand miles away." Gale's forced to watch Katniss get engaged to Peeta and watch her go into the Games a second time. He gets to see things from two perspective because he sees what's portrayed on television but gets what Katniss tells him. Before she leaves for the Victory Tour and once she comes home, he fights for her affections. Once she sent back in the second Games, he watches as Peeta and her grow closer and watches as Peeta literally does everything he can to save Katniss. This is reflected in those closing lines that you mention. |
