It's clear that the song is about a relationship between the main singer and her lover. Some people think that the relationship is not steady, and that the boy's mind is elsewhere. I think so too, but in a different regard. My interpretation is that the boy has had a traumatic experience, one that still haunts him (But he is restless at night / He has horrible dreams). This experience causes him to be distant at times. The girl doesn't have a full understanding of his past("Don't know where he's been going / Don't know where he's been") and when she tries to either a) understand his past or b) to fix him, he resists ("And if I try to get close / He is already gone"). Also, his parents have already died, and they seem to have passed away before the boy's traumatic episode("And he won't tell his folks / 'Cause they're already ghosts"). The boy's past / depression might cause the boy to be manic at times, have violent outbursts, or have a reality that is separate from the girls'. When she says "Will you stay with me, my love / For another day?" She might be asking him to hang on to reality and not go into his own little world. She could also be begging him not to commit suicide. I only focused on the relationship element between the two characters in the song, not the "run" repetition. I hope this helped! |
