Animal Collective – Safer Lyrics 11 years ago
"Sometimes I don't want to kiss you. Don't mean that I don't like to kiss you, it just means these lips are mine."

Yes, the imagery here is a little hard to specifically break down, but we all know exactly what he's talking about whether we can dissect the specifics or not. It evokes the emotion intended. We can feel what he's feeling. And it's haunting and sad and happy and beautiful all in one, it's perfect.

I disagree that it's about a bad trip or about drugs at all.
I believe it's just using metaphors and imagery to get across an abstract idea.
Brilliant.

Animal Collective – Banshee Beat Lyrics 11 years ago
Just one thing I want to say,
'The words, they sting like a stump of old wasps. Do you remember when I said go throw the rocks in there?'
I think that's connected- the rocks thrown into the stump of wasps, which sent them running for the house.
Or, rather, 'poking the bear' if you will- stirring up something that's gonna be scary and gonna sting.
I enjoy reading your interpretation :)
This song is nothing shy of magic.

The Hush Sound – The Artist Lyrics 11 years ago
This has been my favorite song since I was 13, when my niece was born this was the lullaby I would sing to her.
Now, 9 years later, my life's come full circle to this song. I find myself heels over head for this cynical, angry artist boy truly does wish to see me delicate and weak, so little purpose; hates when I stand my ground and fight back.
So, one interpretation, the one I've always identified with, is that she is being extremely literal throughout this song and is actually involved with an artist.
My other potential interpretation has been that perhaps she's both characters in this song at the same time. She has her hope and optimism and finds the world beautiful, but there's another side to her that is trying to overtake the happier one- a more cynical one who puts down her optimistic tendencies.
She's the artist, and the hardest to deal with because of the dual nature fighting within herself.
I'm prone to believe that it is about some artist boy she's emotionally invested in and exasperated with, it's also just interesting to toss around some other possible meanings in my head.
This song is gold.

Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk Lyrics 11 years ago
Where the lyrics say 'Tower of Pisa' here...
I definitely hear "Starry-eyed fever".
It just seems more fitting to me.
"I'm just a little bit starry-eyed fever whenever I see you, so please be kind if I'm a mess."

I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone say this yet

The kitties reference seems to me to be a clear reference to Ketamine.

Animal Collective – Unsolved Mysteries Lyrics 12 years ago
I interpret this a bit differently than what I've read from others so far.
What I get from this track is a general comment on how growing up and having fear and pain instilled can change you from sweet and innocent to hardened and bitter.

The first verse I see as the introduction of stress and fear into a child's life; the grueling task of trying to make your parents proud (seeking their praise, joining in the 'dance' to keep from embarrassing them), and also picking up the silly fears that are instilled by fretful parents (fear of 'sharks' who aren't actually vicious in nature..)
The second verse, I see him attempting a simple romance with a woman who has already been hardened by the world; attempting to be with someone who isn't in good mental health (maybe bipolar disorder, etc.)
Of course, I am hearing quite a few of these lyrics differently from what's posted.
"Oh, what's pain? And oh, what's sadness anyway? She stopped crying like a child. And oh, what's graying? And oh, what's aging anyway?"
So with those words, it logically seems to me that SHE is the one who becomes Jack the Ripper. Lashing out at him in a cold, hateful way that isn't compatible with how womanly she was just moments earlier. The spiteful persona is a defense mechanism built up to protect her from being hurt by the world, a shell brought on by the pain of growing up.
She stopped crying like a child, and converted that pain/sadness into bitterness and anger instead.
If you've ever dealt with someone suffering from bipolar or a related mental illness, you know how suddenly and drastically that person can transform before your eyes. They can be the kindest person, then suddenly they're on the attack.
Especially as far as relationships go, it is extremely taxing and frustrating and quite hurtful to deal with.
Her eyes are different every time she looks at him, because she's someone else every time.

I'm not implying that's the intended meaning behind this, simply an alternative interpretation- what I personally get out of it when I hear it.
