I think everyone has a different interpretation depending on where they are in life and from the way I see it, it's about two lovers who broke up but one is still attached. The first few lines are there to create the imagery of the dark and sad day when a lover leaves. The person is angry and hurt telling them to glide away on soapy heels referring to the fact that the lover was childish and careless and broke a lot of promises when he/she left. The person is hurt about all the broken promises but he/she still loves his/her lover. He/she has begun to guard his/her heart with chains so that he/she cannot be hurt by their careless lover and when the lover is ready to come back and make amends he/she will take the chain off his/her heart. The verse about never loving is referring to the idea that he/she won't say that he/she will never be able to love again, however, "I don't say a lot of things" refers to the idea that the person doesn't believe he/she will be able to love again. All the person wants is for his/her lover to come back and apologize. |

From my perspective and the relationship I was most recently in, this song is about knowing someone's wrong for you and that you need to walk away but you're having a hard time actually doing it. He just isn't the person she wants to spend the rest of her life with maybe he isn't what she needs and desires in a man but that doesn't take away the love she has for him. I believe she's walking away out of love for him, knowing she isn't right for him either. Everything she ever did for him was because she loved him. She wants to remain friends because they were so close for so long and she still cares but she knows she has to let go and he can't be the one she runs to when hurt anymore. She knows she isn't supposed to be with him but it's difficult to stay away and he's so hurt from her walking away that he's slamming her fingers in the door on the way out. She knows she has had enough of him hurting her but she still continues to go back to him and ask him for more. It's all because of love but she knows she needs he isn't right for her and she needs to leave, that doesn't stop her from continuing to love him and care. |
