| Tom Waits – November Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Part of the genius of Tom Waits is his ability to evoke images so intensely with such seeming ease. This song is a perfect example. I feel if your from the south or a warm climate, this song may not be felt so strong as it were if you've experienced November in the north where the first word that comes to mind is not Thanksgiving but COLD! Cold is the essence. Look at the stark desperation and sadness in each line. Its almost entirely without hope. With several references to death or entrapment and only one use of the word cold, to me he clearly evokes a kind of outdoor despair that's felt by anyone, worker, hunter, survivalist that has endured more of the cold than is tolerable. This song is one of my favorite of Toms, it never fails to warm my heart, which i need in Novembers cold chain, made of wet boots and rain. | |
