Pedro the Lion – Discretion Lyrics 6 years ago
Another theory just came to mind! When he says the killer traveled eastbound, I always assumed he was travelling away from the crime scene. What if it wasn't a crime scene at all, and he was simply driving to his destination to complete his job.

Here's my second theory. The son hired a hit man to kill the farmer. Racked with guilt, he goes out into the pasture and kills himself. The hit man arrives, stumbles upon the dead son, and then realizes he won't be getting paid. If you notice, there is no indication in the song that the son was murdered. Only that he died out in the pasture.

I came up with another theory today. Perhaps the killer and hit man aren't the same person. So the theory goes something like this...

The farmer and his son are at odds for whatever reason. The son obviously hires someone to off his old man, but before that ever happens, the son is murdered. Maybe the dad put a hit on him as well. Maybe it was just a coincidence. But in the song, the killer drives away from the scene after killing the son, then there's a short pause before the next verse. Almost like it's transitioning to the next scene. That's where the hit man comes in. He arrives at the farm, and as he's deciding how he's going to get the job done, he stumbles on the murder scene. realizing the man who ordered the hit is dead, he realizes he isn't getting paid.

Pedro the Lion – The Longest Winter Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always loved this song...it just has so much raw emotion and honesty in the lyrics. Ever since I first heard it, I have always imagined that the song is about an old man (lyrics like, "this old flame" and "love well young man" indicate age) who's wife passed away years ago. His wife was the light of his life, and meant everything to him. When she died, he felt that life was no longer worth participating in. He felt that his life could no longer be lived in a fulfilling way without his one true love. Never moving on, he is now a shut-in, and the bitter loneliness and depression he faces on a daily basis cripples him. He is stagnant and frozen, and he will be until the day he dies. I imagine his children reaching out to him to visit them or go out and socialize, but because of his stubbornness, he refuses, living his life out in solitude and misery. In my mind, I always thought of the old man from the movie Up in the opening scene. His wife's passing caused him to become angry, bitter, and alone.

Now, so many years later, after hearing this song a thousand times, I find myself relating to the song in a way I thought I never would. My wife of 11 years recently told me that she is leaving me. She wants to move on and experience life. I love her more than anything on earth, and it is destroying me. Now I can see how the song can absolutely be about a man like me who was betrayed and abandoned by the one person on earth he thought he would be with until the day he died. A woman who brought him so much joy, but then hurt him in the worst way possible. Because of what she did to him, he is simply unable to trust anyone. The idea of moving on or trying to love another is just nowhere inside of him. His leaves have turned. He is damaged beyond repair...at least, that's the attitude he has decided to take, and because of this, he has called upon himself the longest winter, and now it's too late.

The pain I am experiencing is monumental. I have no idea how I can ever be with anyone else...ever. Songs like this, however, with all the honesty and pain exposed, help me to see what sort of fate I can call upon myself if I simply give up. David Bazan...thank you.
