To me it screams sexual assult. You take me down (somewhere private or physically she's beneath in some way.) You're too strong, I don't want to try (freezing is common during assault, especially if it feels like there's no point because the other person is stronger.) She's going over the ways her assailant is a shitty person in the next verse. Humiliation!! I'm suffocating!! Is what you feel after being assulted. It's humiliating and brings overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame, and anger. The prayer at the end seals the deal. She's retreated to prayer either during the encounter to check out, or she has to repeat the prayer to herself after because what's done is done and shittily enough it's "God's" will that it happened, her having no say in the matter. |

A dysfunctional family yes, but I'm not sure I agree with it being alcoholism. I can see how it might be referencing that, but I still think it's more about the pain her mother has been in and is going through. Like her mother being unhappy and she doesn't know how she can help her. Shes afraid shes going to lose her if she continues in the state she's in. |

I'm glad there are so many people who don't know what it is to be addicted, but this song is obviously about heroin. Granted, Gavin described writing this after a breakup but I honestly think he was keeping face. SHOOT UP is what people call injecting themselves with heroin. You come down, you don't want to, you're on a cloud when you're high. She cut me right down to size - us addicts are often criticized by loved ones about the brutal reality of our highs. Why did you come down? - I take this as the person he loves stopped getting high with him, but it could be she had enough of his shit and just left the relationship. This whole album is heavily influenced by heroin. Those lyrics you think don't make sense? They all fit together perfectly after you've experienced addiction and withdraw. |

Such a beautiful song; instrumentally and vocally esquisite. <3 Simple lyrics but so much meaning: A relationship that is broken and it is hurting the indivdual. Whatever happened, they are afraid that they will lose the other person. They don't want to, they just want that relationship back to the way it was. It feels like no one cares anymore. But either way that person will relive those happy memories forever. And is dying for the other person to believe in them again. |
