Toad the Wet Sprocket – Walk On The Ocean Lyrics 11 years ago
I am almost certain that this song is about how alive one seems to feel out in nature.

WALK ON THE OCEAN --- literally
Step on the Stones --- literally
Flesh becomes water --- metaphorically
Wood becomes bone --- metaphorically, (but also somewhat literally----because on a molecular level, we need the oxygen that photosynthetic organisms produce... we are very much intertwined with the world around us, like trees, water, etc...)

Anyway... the song is about the feeling of being alive during a certain time and place when the natural world/universe was experienced, felt, and remembered.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 11 years ago
Denial. Keep it simple. I know people like to over-complicate things for fun. But, this song is about denial.

The song is satirical. The the blunt of the joke is whoever is in denial... including the person who sings the song. He even says it at the end of the song: "A denial."

The song takes you through the thought process of someone who is in denial about how hypocritical a revolution can sometimes be or come across to others.

The song is not being too judgmental. It's just a song and I think for that reason it doesn't make being in denial too much of a negative thing... it just is what it is.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 11 years ago
I do know what this song is about...

You have to notice two things:

1) There is a slight struggle between the author and the person he is talking to in the song. (notice how he throws in there: ''you don't really care for music, do you?'')

2) So, what is this struggle? The struggle is this--the person speaking is trying to express something that can't be expressed in normal words or language; rather, it takes a word like ''Hallelujah" and a song to express it.

You have to keep it simple sometimes. Think of the title of the song: "Hallelujah." THAT's what the song is about!!

Hallelujah is an expression that the song writer chooses to focus on and use to express something that otherwise couldn't be expressed.

In other words---and this is the blunt of the song---he is trying to express something that can't be expressed with any other word.

Each VERSE is a different attempt to express the SAME thing. He's trying to explain to someone what 'Hallelujah' is. And even though he thinks he probably failed at expressing his thoughts to the other person... he still sings it.

Furthermore, each CHORUS is an attempt to express the SAME thing as the verse. It is just him melodically using the word 'Hallelujah.'

So, in conclusion... the meaning of the song is something that can't really be expressed with words... it is something that has to be expressed in song! So, ya, it's a cool song.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 12 years ago
There is obviously a meaning to this song. A lot of us feel it, but I have a lot of practice in this kind of stuff so I will describe it to you.

First part of song: Introduction.

You're an innocent child doing things innocent children do, like crawling on your knees and making mom proud. But, you find your first critics in life and they are within your own family. Even though you are very cute and people love to watch you--your voice is too loud. It is a very subtle critique. So subtle that it almost gets lost in the rest of the praise that you're getting before and after it.

"Your voice is too loud"---This is the key line in the first part of the song. It is a line that represents the first of many subtle criticisms that the world places on an innocent victim--Your voice is too loud.

"You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward him
Making momma so proud
But your voice is too loud
We like to watch you laughing
Picking insects off of plants
No time to think of consequences"

Second part of song: Chorus.

The innocent child has just been subtly dissed. Now, this part of the song is offering a little advice. Some pointers for getting through this situation that you're in... this is your task: control yourself. You're in a situation with people around you. From a child's perspective, people's bodies are very prominent, and adults are at a huge advantage. They basically look like trees to children sometimes. You don't have the advantage, and you can't control others, so control yourself... that is how you get by in a world where innocence is criticized.

You can't control the fact that the people around you are making decisions that cause them to be haunted. A lot of the people around children are haunted themselves... as is shown in the music video--the mom is the one who is so distracted. People have regrets, vain ambitions, and things going on in their own lives... and the children grow up in that atmosphere and can't do anything about it.

So control yourself, don't take too much from the people you depend on who are at the moment making decisions that are allowing them to be haunted, don't overstep your boundaries; just do what you need to do while you're at the size disadvantage.

"Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting to be haunted"

Last part of the song: Conclusion

The last part of the song is what happens as time passes. Time passes; seasons change; situations change; children grow up; other children are born; memories fade; decisions are made. And, some decisions have nothing to do with money and support in a material way. Sometimes as people grow older they make decisions based on the things they feel about their situation. At some point, in the growing up process, a decision was made, maybe to move away or separate from old situations. And it hurts.

The song ends without saying whether or not the decision was 'right' or 'wrong' it just hurts. Whether it was right or wrong--sometimes as time passes, it just hurts. We start to realize that maybe the decision wasn't necessary, but at the same time we don't know what else we could have done. It just hurts. And that's it. There's the whole meaning of the song.

"The water is warm
But it's sending me shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
Memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions too
Decisions are made
Decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not"
