Believe it or not, part of the answering machine message on the psycho city track was the person that actually did the crime, and Jack did the time... Some people in LA said at the time that Alan Niven was involved... |

| I have long been a fan of LZ. This song, as many of theirs are, are about all sides of life, death, spirituality, beliefs, black magic, and a filtering of the books of the time when they were writing their songs. Look at the largest book of influence of this song in particular, is the Bible. There are metaphors throughout this song from several books of the Bible, but the majority of the metaphors are from the Book of Revelations. Good vs. Evil, life, pain, images, choices, paths, idolatry, etc... The use of symbolism of these subjects/topics are as old as the Bible itself, so what a great reference to use to use their own interpretation of these in this timeless classic. They were very clever when they wrote their songs about these subjects as it gave them an instant means of controversy, which sparked their popularity because it invites the listener to critique them as good, evil, and the on and on... Their music has maintained relevance over the past 50 years because of this understanding of the material is about things that cause the listener to "think" about what it all really means. The true genius of this is inherent in the fact that they still being talked about, no different that the mysteries of the Bible, and so on... If they had written songs about fast cars and other trivial subjects, then their music would have never had any teeth to still be of relevance today. However, it is a fact that much of their music deals with the darker side of the Bible, and the Tolkien-ist way of thinking about spiritual hedonism, exploring the darker sides of any reality based literature, and hence, the works of Anton Levy. Black magic and the occult were common themes Of LZ's music, especially in the LZ4 effort. The entire album was conceived, written, and recorded in Alistair Crowley's mansion after Page purchased the estate 11 days after he supposedly kicked heroine addiction there with no outside help. Something or someone was at work here... The clues in this song are all there forwards as you listen to this masterpiece, however, the backwards masking of this song to me was a ploy to sell the song. I have repeated the verses over and over many times through the same type RTR players that were used on the recording, and not once could I get the same results of what you hear when you listen to the song backwards on youtube or other social media sites. Very clever marketing as it sparked and investigation, which led to sales of the material. There is no doubt that this song, and many of the ones they recorded had dealt with the "darker" side, but the whole back masking thing was a creation of an over zealous minister with too much time on his hands in Franklin KY back in 1983. Artists often dabble in controversial material, often push the limit, often capitalize from the results, and in this ERA of music, Led Zeppelin and the content of their lyrics and music had never been pulled-off in America. The oldest book in the world was read, studied, interpreted, and slapped into recorded history as music and songs by the most clever and metaphorical version of the book... Free will and free thinking at some in all of this has to come about. The choice then is up to the listener. | |
