A Great Big World – Say Something Lyrics 12 years ago
What a touching comment--we should all remember that the people we meet may indeed have had such a rough start in life and need all the kindness we can show them. Bless you for giving them a safe place to be while dealing with such heartbreak.

I also found that last line of your comment lovely and deeply thought-provoking...isn't music a wonderful gift to the world to make us think such meaningful thoughts....

Thanks Lunar123--nice to know someone else saw this wonderful layer of meaning also.

You have been misinformed. Sarah did indeed write this, and freely explains what it is about--musicians dying from heroin overdose.

How could anyone think it?......hmmmm, maybe because Sarah herself says that what it's about.....and the lyrics are very specific. Anyone can assign their own private meaning to a song--that's certainly their right--but they don't get to deny the songwriter's right to say what she actually meant when she wrote the song!

Thanks for the astute comment and link--I too am amazed at the people who can't understand the very plain lyrics, and refuse to take note of her own explanation. I think because the melody is so beautiful, they just listen to a phrase or two, "in the arms of the angel fly away from here" and listen no further....the first time I heard it being played at some firemen's "hero funeral", I nearly choked in amazement....but now it's done so regularly there's just no stopping it....truly mind-boggling how little comprehension the general public shows.....

Sarah McLachlan – Angel Lyrics 12 years ago
Its about what the songwriter says its about.....and SHE says its about musicians she's known going through hard times, turning to heroin for comfort, and eventually overdosing in some "dark, cold hotel room". The lyrics are very clear--no ambiguity at all--I knew their exact meaning long before I read the interview in which she discussed her meaning. Sometimes I wonder about the general comprehension level of listeners.

The intention of a true artist is to write something that can connect to many different listeners in very personal ways. I think it would thrill the songwriter to know that you found such meaningful intimate truth in their words. As a fellow survivor of an abusive relationship, I know that you really have to give up that "hope" completely and walk away. Release this person--and your love for them--to the Loving Universe, and honor your own intrinsic value by finding someone else to love who can show you the same kind of love in return. As Maya Angelou says, "when someone tells you who they are [with their actions and words] you need to believe them." People rarely change, and we certainly can't make them change. You seem like a kind, thoughtful person....please be safe, and find the kind of love that those around you can celebrate and be inspired by--that is a gift to both yourself and to the world, which desperately needs to see more of the right kind of love.........smiles for your beautiful, better future......

Very thoughtful! I really enjoy thought-provoking analysis like this that looks deeper than the obvious surface. All artists hope their art inspires this kind of perceptive consideration.

The genius of a truly well-written song is that it lends itself to many levels of meaning, and all those levels can co-exist. (Think "Hallelujah" by Cohen.) While this song certainly seems to suggest a human relationship about to end, on a deeper level it reminded me of the emotional struggle of someone walking away from a traditional perception of God...not knowing where such a path would lead. The empty, small feeling of unanswered prayers and waning faith would say all these same words. (For those of you who might find that too dark, let me add that such a moment is often a necessary part of a journey to a deeper kind of spirituality--or for others, the start of seeing the world in a more compassionate, pragmatic way.)
