I'd say without a doubt that this song is about a guy who's too afraid or doesn't know how to express his feelings around a girl he likes, probably a close friend. He really likes her, but when he's around her he just treats her like a friend, his anxiety is making him think he's coming on too strong or too weak to actually win her heart. - ("Is this "climbing up to the moon?") Wondering to himself if what he'd say to her would be too much or if it would go to far and scare her away. -("Or is it bailing out too soon?") Wondering if what he would say to her would be too little, not enough to express how much this girl means to him. -("I hope we didn't wait too long") He hopes they didn't wait too long too long in the friendship zone for him to advance to relationship status with the girl. -("All that I wanted to say, words only got in the way. But then I found another way to communicate.") What he actually wanted to tell her was just ruined by nervousness and not saying the right thing. But then he found another way to communicate, though music? Could be the song is actually about James. ("Things I could say to myself, I could never say to anyone else.") The thoughts and feelings towards her and what he would say to her would be safe in his mind, but he could never tell anyone for fear of being made fun of or rejection on the girls part. ("But what Madonna said really helped, She said, "Boy, you better learn to express yourself!") Obviously referencing Madonna's Express Yourself, particularly the chorus: Express yourself (You've got to make him) Express himself Hey, hey, hey, hey So if you want it right now, make him show you how Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not Madonna's song is from the girls perspective. She really does like this guy. She's trying help him (or hoping he would just) express his feelings to her. ("I know we didn't, I know we didn't wait too long, 'Cause anytime's a good time to move on.") He finally gives in and tells this girl how much he likes her. The girl rejects him, and he knows that he didn't wait too long, because anytime was a good time to move on from her because she was always going to say no. He learned his lesson, next time he's going to climb up to the moon before he bails out. |
