Fall Out Boy – Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year Lyrics 12 years ago
Hmm I didn't read this until after I wrote my interpretation. I think that this lie they are singing is their new, more commercial sound. The reason they can't tell if it's a slump or a comeback is because in a way it is both. From Under the Cork Tree may be more successful in reaching a wider audience and having more 'hits' but is it true to what the band started out as? They're growing old and no longer the kids their dye-hard fans 'used' to love. They're ashamed of these new songs and words because they're no longer something they do just for the music but there is this new pressure of being commercially successful.
Just some thoughts. I'm still confused by some parts of the song. But it wouldn't be a FOB song if I weren't slightly confused lol

I think it's no surprise that this is right in the middle of From Under the Cork Tree, the album where the band's audience and sound really began to change. This song is about growing into fame and catering to a wider, more mainstream audience. They have discovered this "formula" in their sound and their lyrics that will lead them to more success. However, it's not necessarily a good thing - they are "growing up" into this new style but "are they going down" in the quality of their music? Are they becoming sell outs who will soon be "found out" by their original fan-base?

They know they will stay with style or this "lie" they keep singing because it will guarantee their commercial success even though they're ashamed of the "way the songs and words go to the beating of [their] hearts". So when they are singing these songs, on the surface they might seem like something to 'believe' in, but they are actually 'lies' because they're not as genuine as they used to be. They hope that you 'steal a line' and listen to them even though they've changed because it'd be worse if their original fan-base turned on them. "Give in" to our new sound or just "give up" on us because we can't go back to being "the kids you used to love".
