| The Reflections – (Just Like) Romeo and Juliet Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
This is a fun song. The comparison of the singer's love for his girlfriend and his plans to woo her to the play "Romeo and Juliet" is a bit forced. The only thing the singer is really trying to say is that his love is as HUGE and IMPORTANT as Romeo's was for Juliet. Other than that there are no parallels to the NON-historical story of Romeo and Juliet. The almost scary aspect of the song is the references to the tragedy "like Romeo and Juliet" that will result if the singer cannot get a job. Romeo and Juliet DIED because of a misunderstanding. The singer of this song seems willing to kill himself and his girlfriend if he can't buy a stupid car! Now, THAT would be a tragedy!! |

| Talking Heads – Burning Down the House Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I believe that songs like this that have no obvious meaning have NO meaning. I do not necessarily believe that the writer(s) was/were high on drugs while composing. "Meaning" has not been necessary in composition of songs, poetry, stories, etc. for decades. In poetry it's called free verse. If you read writing teachers' books they encourage "free association" exercises. They have you write down a word or phrase and then words and phrases that the original word or phrase conjures. One is supposed to continue this so that branches shoot off in every direction. Taken to the extreme one would eventually include every word in the dictionary!! So, what I believe happens is that someone in a band thinks up a word or phrase (NOT A CONCEPT OR MEANING). Then the individual or group toss out words/phrases that pop into their heads. Did Talking Heads start with "Burning down the house" or with "Fight fire with fire"? Or with some other phrase or word in the song? Bottom line for me is, who knows and who cares? If the song has no obvious "meaning" then there is NO meaning. It's just a bunch of words/phrases that the songwriter(s) threw together and called "art". |
